IndiGo Expands International Operations with Norse Atlantic Airways Aircraft Leasing Agreement

IndiGo has announced a new agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways to damp lease two additional Boeing Dreamliner 787-9 aircraft. This move aims to enhance IndiGo's wide-body fleet. The agreement follows a previous announcement in February where IndiGo planned to lease four such aircraft from the Norwegian carrier. The expansion aligns with IndiGo's strategy to increase its international presence, especially in Europe.

IndiGo Signs Aircraft Leasing Pact with Norse Atlantic

The partnership between IndiGo and Norse Atlantic Airways now includes six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners. One of these aircraft has been operational on the Delhi-Bangkok route since March 1. The latest additions are expected to begin service by early 2026, focusing on long-haul routes originating from India.

IndiGo's Strategic Expansion

IndiGo's CEO, Pieter Elbers, expressed enthusiasm about the expanded partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways. "We have deepened our partnership with Norse Atlantic Airways by signing our third agreement for the addition of two more Boeing 787-9 aircraft. This move reinforces our commitment to international growth and our customers, promising to introduce more options on long-haul routes," he stated.

The damp lease agreement includes maintenance but excludes crew and insurance. Initially set for six months, the lease can be extended up to 18 months, pending regulatory approval. This strategic collaboration aims to meet the growing demand for international travel from India.

Growth in Air Passenger Traffic

A report by CareEdge predicts a 9% annual growth rate in air passenger traffic between FY2025 and FY2027. By FY27, passenger volume is expected to reach approximately 485 million. The report also highlights that international traffic will likely grow faster due to more wide-body aircraft being introduced from FY26.

Norse Atlantic had previously signed a Letter of Intent for six Dreamliners with another airline in November last year. IndiGo's current expansion plans are part of a broader strategy to cater to increasing international travel demands from India.

IndiGo's focus on expanding its long-haul capabilities comes amid rising international traffic from India. The airline aims to launch direct flights to Europe as part of this strategy, leveraging its growing fleet of wide-body aircraft.

This collaboration marks a significant step for IndiGo as it continues to strengthen its international operations. With the addition of these new aircraft, IndiGo is well-positioned to offer more options for long-haul travel, meeting the needs of its expanding customer base.
