The dates came out as a key takeaway from a meeting between IPL authorities and team owners in Abu Dhabi on Monday evening, a report by Cricbuzz said.

While the start date has largely been finalised, the venue for the IPL 2026 opening match remains under discussion, with Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium emerging as a strong contender.

IPL 2026 Dates Communicated to Franchises

The proposed IPL 2026 start date, from March 26 to May 31, was formally communicated to franchises by IPL CEO Hemang Amin, giving teams early clarity for planning logistics, player availability, and commercial commitments.

The possibility of Bengaluru hosting the IPL 2026 opening match has generated major buzz among fans and franchises. According to a Deccan Herald report, Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) President Venkatesh Prasad confirmed that discussions are underway with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding hosting the season opener at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Speaking to media persons, Prasad said he has already held talks with the BCCI. "The board is actively discussing the proposal. However, a final decision on the opening venue is yet to be announced."

IPL 2026 Auction Underway in Abu Dhabi

Even as preparations for the new season gather pace, the IPL 2026 mini-auction is currently underway at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The auction, which began at 2:30 PM IST on December 16, features 369 shortlisted players across 42 sets.

All 10 IPL franchises are participating in the auction to fill 77 available slots, including 31 overseas player positions, with a combined purse of Rs. 237.55 crore. Bidding at the IPL 2026 auction is capped at Rs. 18 crore for overseas players, and franchises are expected to focus on squad depth, injury replacements, and long-term backups. The auction is being broadcast live on the JioHotstar app and website, with television coverage on the Star Sports Network.

While the IPL 2026 start date and end date have broadly been finalised, the full IPL 2026 match schedule, including fixtures, match timings, double-header dates, and playoff venues, is yet to be officially announced by the BCCI.
