Iran-Israel Tension: Indian Embassy in Tehran Advises Citizens in Iran to Leave at Earliest, Avoid Travelling
India has issued a fresh advisory for its citizens in Iran, urging those currently in the country to leave through available transport options at the earliest, while advising other Indians to avoid travelling to Iran until further notice. The warning comes amid a sharp escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran, raising fresh concerns over safety and security across the region.
Indians in Iran to Leave at Earliest, Avoid Travelling; Embassy in Tehran Releases Advisory
In a statement issued through the Indian Embassy in Tehran, the government said it was reiterating its earlier advisory in view of the latest developments in West Asia. The embassy urged Indian nationals presently in Iran to make arrangements to depart through available and safe travel options. It also advised Indian citizens to avoid any non-essential travel to Iran at this time.

Iran-Israel Tension: Israel and Iran Exchange Fresh Strikes, Raising Fears of Wider Regional Conflict
The latest advisory follows renewed military action between Israel and Iran. Reports indicate that Israeli forces carried out strikes on multiple locations inside Iran, including targets in the country's southwest. Iran subsequently responded with missile attacks directed at sites in Israel, with both sides reporting military operations overnight.
The fresh exchange of attacks has increased fears of a broader regional conflict and prompted governments across the world to closely monitor the situation. The latest hostilities mark one of the most serious escalations since a ceasefire was reached earlier this year following weeks of confrontation between the two countries.
Indian authorities have been monitoring the situation closely and have issued several advisories in recent months as tensions in the region intensified. However, the latest notice is among the strongest issued so far, as it specifically advises Indians already residing or staying in Iran to leave the country rather than merely exercise caution.
How Many Indians Live in Iran?
According to the Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) Data on Indian Diaspora Abroad as of January 2026, there are around 9,488 overseas Indians living in Iran. This includes approximately 9,000 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) and 488 Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs).
The government has also requested Indian nationals in Iran to remain in contact with the Indian Embassy and keep track of official updates and emergency communications. Family members of Indians residing in Iran have similarly been advised to follow information released through official government and embassy channels.
