Stock Market Holiday: The Indian stock market will remain closed on Thursday, January 15, due to the municipal corporation elections in Maharashtra, as announced by NSE and BSE in their circulars on Monday, January 12.

Trading in equity segment, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives, and electronic gold receipts will not be carried out on Thursday, January 15, the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) stated in a circular. Later, NSE also confirmed that trading in equity and derivatives segment will remain closed on Thursday.

Stock Market Holiday On January 15: BSE To Remain Shut On Thursday

Trading in equity, equity derivatives, commodity derivatives, and electronic gold receipts (EGR) will remain closed on January 15, on account of the Municipal Corporation Election, announced BSE on Monday. However, the evening sesion of the commodity derivatives segment will be operated as usual.

" In continuation to the Exchange Notice 20260109-16, Trading Members are requested to note that on account of Municipal Corporation Election scheduled to be held on January 15, 2026, the following trading segments will remain closed on January 15, 2026: Equity Segment, Equity Derivatives Segment, Commodity Derivatives Segment, Electronic Gold Receipts."

As per the BSE circular, the equity derivatives contracts scheduled to expire on January 15, 2026 will be preponed to January 14, 2026.

Stock Market Holiday On January 15: NSE To Remain Closed

"NSE Clearing Limited here by notifies Wednesday, January 15, 2026 as a transaction holiday on account of Municipal Corporation Election in Maharashtra," noted NSE in its circular.Indian stock exchanges will stay closed for 16 market holidays in 2026, not counting weekends.

January has two breaks, with January 15 newly added to the list and January 26, Republic Day, marking the second closure of the month.

The full calendar spreads across the year, starting with Holi on March 3 and ending with Christmas on December 25. Independence Day on August 15 falls on a weekend in 2026, so markets will not have an extra trading holiday for that date.

In the first six months, trading will remain halted on Holi (March 3), Ram Navami (March 26) and Mahavir Jayanti (March 31). Good Friday on April 3, Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14, Maharashtra Day on May 1 and Bakri Id on May 28 will also be non-trading days for market participants.

The second half of 2026 will also see several market holidays. Trading will be closed on Muharram (June 26) followed by Ganesh Chaturthi (September 14). Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 and Dussehra on October 20 will bring further non-trading sessions.

Later in the year, markets will not operate on Diwali Balipratipada (November 10) and Guru Nanak Jayanti (November 24). The final market holiday of 2026 will be Christmas on December 25, rounding off the 16 scheduled exchange closures excluding weekends.
