Today, Friday, September 5, 2025, is not a nationwide bank holiday, but banks in several states and cities are closed for Eid-e-Milad (Milad-un-Nabi) and the Thiruvonam or Onam festival 2025. As per the RBI bank holiday calendar for September 2025, many regions are observing a public holiday, while others remain open.

Bank Holiday Today, September 5th
In India, the bank holiday today is being observed in Ranchi, Srinagar and parts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu for the Eid-e-Milad and Onam/Thiruvonam festivals. Meanwhile, in Shillong and Shimla, banks remain open because the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) cancelled the earlier declared holiday.
RBI Bank Holiday Update for Mumbai
The RBI notification issued on September 3 clarified that the Mumbai bank holiday for Eid-e-Milad has been shifted from September 5 to September 8. Therefore, banks in Mumbai are open on September 5 but will remain closed on Monday, September 8, for Milad-un-Nabi.
Thiruvonam/Onam Bank Holiday 2025
Today people in the south of India are celebrating Thiruvonam 2025, the most important day of the Onam festival in Kerala. Many banks in Kerala and Tamil Nadu are closed, though some branches are operational. However, timings may change because of the Onam bank holiday.
Eid-e-Milad is a bank holiday
Eid-e-Milad 2025, also known as Milad-un-Nabi, is the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad. It is observed as a public holiday in several states across India.
