The Indian government has cleared 110 out of 111 applications for the import of IT hardware products worth nearly USD 10 billion on the first day of implementing the new import authorization system. The companies that received import approvals include Apple, Dell, Lenovo, HP India Sales Pvt Ltd, ASUS India, IBM India, Samsung India Electronics, Xiaomi Technology India, Cisco Commerce India, Microsoft Corporation India, Siemens Ltd, Bosch Ltd, Redington Ltd, Ingram Micro India, and Oracle India.

Simplified Import Process

IT hardware imports

The new system aims to monitor shipments of laptops, tablets, and computers into the country without disrupting the market supply or creating a cumbersome licensing regime. Companies seeking authorization will not face any difficulties under the new system, as reflected by the clearance of almost all applications received so far.

Denied Entity List

Companies on the denied entity list, including those that have not fulfilled or defaulted on export obligations by availing benefits of schemes like advance authorization and Export Promotion Capital Goods (EPCG), or those with Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) cases against them, will not be granted import authorizations.

Exclusions and Validity

The new mechanism excludes the import of second-hand goods or refurbished items, as the standard operating procedure for such imports is different. The import authorization will remain valid until September 2024.

Import Data

In 2022-23, India imported personal computers, including laptops, worth USD 5.33 billion, primarily from China (USD 5.11 billion), Singapore (USD 1.4 billion), Hong Kong (USD 807 million), the US (USD 344.7 million), Malaysia (USD 324.8 million), Taiwan (USD 272.5 million), the Netherlands (USD 132.8 million), and Vietnam (USD 126 million).

The new import authorization system for IT hardware products streamlines the process, ensuring a trusted supply chain while not hindering market supply. With the clearance of almost all applications, the system proves to be efficient and hassle-free for importers. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to fostering a conducive business environment and promoting the growth of the IT industry in India.
