August 31, 2026, is the last date for certain taxpayers with business or professional income to file their income tax returns for Assessment Year 2026-27. The deadline mainly applies to taxpayers whose accounts are not required to undergo a tax audit.

Income Tax Filing Last Date Today: What Happens If You Miss August 31 ITR Deadline?

The deadline is important for small business owners, professionals, freelancers and eligible partners of firms that are not subject to audit. Those who fall into this category should file their returns by today to avoid additional costs and possible restrictions on their tax options.

Income Tax Filing Last Date Today

The August 31 deadline does not apply to every taxpayer. Salaried individuals and others without business or professional income generally had July 31, 2026, as their filing deadline.

ITR Filing Last Date August 31: Who Needs to File Today?

Taxpayers earning income from a business or profession, where an audit is not required, generally come under the August 31 deadline. Depending on their income and eligibility, they may need to file ITR-3 or ITR-4. This makes it important for taxpayers to check their income category before assuming that the July 31 deadline applies to them.

For taxpayers whose accounts require an audit, the deadline is later. Companies and taxpayers subject to tax audit generally have until October 31, 2026, while taxpayers requiring a transfer pricing report have a November 30, 2026 deadline.

What Happens If You Miss August 31 ITR Deadline?

Missing the August 31 deadline does not mean that a taxpayer can no longer file an income tax return. Eligible taxpayers can generally submit a belated return until December 31, 2026. However, filing after the original deadline can result in additional costs. A late filing fee may be charged depending on the taxpayer's income.

Late ITR Filing May Increase Your Tax Bill

A late return can also result in interest if the taxpayer has unpaid tax or has not paid enough advance tax during the year. The amount of interest will depend on the taxpayer's individual tax position and the amount of tax already paid. This means that postponing the filing could increase the total amount that eventually has to be paid.

Taxpayers who still have outstanding tax should calculate the amount due and make the necessary payment while completing their return.

Missing Deadline Can Affect Old Tax Regime Choice

There is another important consequence for people earning business or professional income. Taxpayers who want to choose the old tax regime instead of the new tax regime have to complete the required process within the original filing deadline.

This could matter for taxpayers who prefer the old regime because they are eligible for certain deductions or exemptions. Therefore, missing the deadline could have an impact beyond the late fee. It may also limit the tax regime options available to some business and professional taxpayers.

Revised ITR Deadline Extended

Taxpayers who make an eligible mistake in their filed return will have more time to submit a revised return. The time available for filing a revised ITR has been extended from nine months to 12 months from the end of the relevant tax year. This moves the revised return deadline from December 31 to March 31 of the following year.

However, this does not mean that the original filing deadline has been extended. Taxpayers covered by the August 31 deadline still need to file their original return on time.
