The economy of Jammu and Kashmir has shown a growth rate of 9.5%, with the Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) projected to reach Rs 2.45 lakh crore in 2023-24, an increase from Rs 2.20 lakh crore in the previous year. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha shared this information during his address on the eve of the 76th Republic Day.

Jammu and Kashmir Economy Grows by 9.5 Percent

He emphasised the importance of peace and unity, stating, "It is our collective responsibility to maintain peace and harmony, ensuring that the dreams of our youth are not hindered by divisive forces." Sinha also announced plans for local body elections to establish a three-tier governance structure, aiming to enhance public participation.

Economic Growth and Infrastructure Development

The Lieutenant Governor attributed the economic growth to sustained government initiatives and strategic policy measures. He noted that the positive trajectory reflects effective development strategies, infrastructure improvements, and business-friendly policies. "Jammu and Kashmir's economy has recorded a growth rate of 9.5 per cent," he said.

Sinha highlighted significant progress in road connectivity projects. Work is ongoing on major highways like Jammu-Akhnoor-Poonch NH, Srinagar-Baramulla-Uri NH, and Chenani-Sudhmahadev-Khellani-Kishtwar-Khanabal NH. The Banihal bypass on Srinagar-Jammu NH is now open for traffic, and the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway is under construction, promising to cut travel time between Delhi and Katra to six hours.

Advancements in Sustainable Development Goals

Jammu and Kashmir have made notable advancements in implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ranking second among Union Territories in the SDG India Index 2023-24. "Specific policy interventions by the Government have enabled to improve the overall score and ranking," Sinha stated.

He mentioned that data-driven monitoring ensures effective resource allocation and decision-making. Aligning SDGs with the budget and facilitating outcome-based monitoring are planned as future steps. This approach aims to further improve Jammu and Kashmir's performance in achieving sustainable development.

Industrial Development Initiatives

The region has seen significant strides in industrial development, investment, and employment generation recently. New policies like the J&K Export Policy, J&K Logistic Policy, and J&K Procurement Preferences Policy for Micro and Small Enterprises are being prepared to boost economic growth further.

A central sector scheme launched in 2021 with an outlay of Rs 28,400 crore aims to enhance industrial development in Jammu and Kashmir. This package offers incentives like Capital Investment Incentive and Working Capital Interest Subvention, encouraging industrial investment in the Union Territory.

Railway Connectivity and Hydropower Projects

Sinha announced that railways will soon connect Kashmir with the rest of India, marking a new era of development and unity. He also mentioned rapid progress in hydropower generation projects across Jammu and Kashmir.

Eight tunnel projects are nearing completion by December 2025, further enhancing connectivity within the region. These developments are expected to significantly contribute to economic growth and integration with other parts of India.

Employment Opportunities through Industrial Estates

The Lieutenant Governor revealed that groundwork has begun for 889 industrial units, with 324 expected to start production this year. Additionally, 46 new industrial estates with modern facilities are being developed to attract industries and create job opportunities.

The administration has prioritised fast-track recruitment for government jobs. Over the past four to five years, around 40,000 appointments were made based on transparency and merit.

Sinha concluded his address by extending greetings to every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir. He reminded everyone of the enduring values enshrined in India's Constitution: democracy, justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity. "Let us honour our freedom fighters and martyrs who made the supreme sacrifice to protect and preserve our motherland," he said.
