The dispute reached the courts earlier, when a single bench of the Madras High Court permitted the Central Board of Film Certification to grant a certificate, but that order was later paused by a division bench, and the Supreme Court then chose not to intervene in the ongoing matter.

Following these setbacks, the producers dropped the legal challenge and opted to submit 'Jana Nayagan' again to the CBFC's revising committee for another assessment, a move that extended the delay and kept fans waiting for clarity on when Vijay's film will finally reach theatres or digital platforms.
