Jana Nayagan, one of the most anticipated Tamil films of 2026, has reportedly faced a turbulent road ahead of release. While fans were originally expecting the film to hit theatres during Pongal 2026, multiple setbacks, including CBFC-related issues and a massive piracy leak have reportedly delayed the project.

Now, industry insiders suggest that the makers may be targeting a new theatrical release window around June 18, 2026, coinciding with Vijay's birthday celebrations later that week.

Jana Nayagan reportedly hit by CBFC hurdles and piracy leak

According to reports circulating in Tamil film trade circles, Jana Nayagan was initially scheduled for a grand Pongal 2026 release on January 9. However, the film allegedly encountered serious certification-related complications with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), delaying the release timeline.

The situation reportedly worsened on April 9, 2026, when the entire film was allegedly leaked online and distributed illegally across piracy platforms.

Tamil Nadu film distributor Tirupur Subramaniam reportedly estimated that the leak could lead to losses between Rs. 300 crore and Rs. 400 crore. Reports also claim that a previously negotiated OTT streaming deal worth more than Rs. 120 crore was withdrawn after the piracy controversy.

Why June 18 is emerging as the likely release date

Industry speculation is now strongly pointing towards June 18 as the possible new release weekend for the film.

The timing is strategic because the actor will celebrate his 52nd birthday on June 22. Reports suggest that KVN Productions may be planning to position the film as both a birthday celebration release and a farewell cinematic event for Vijay supporters.

The "birthday week release" strategy is expected to maximise fan celebrations and box-office momentum across Tamil Nadu and overseas Tamil markets.

Madras High Court issues anti-piracy injunction

The legal battle around the alleged leak has also intensified. Reports suggest that the Madras High Court has issued an ad-interim injunction restraining cable operators and internet service providers from broadcasting or enabling access to pirated copies of the film until June 2, 2026.
Many industry observers believe the June 2 legal timeline indirectly hints that the makers may be planning a theatrical release shortly afterwards.

Vijay's final film before politics?

One of the biggest reasons behind the massive hype surrounding Jana Nayagan is the belief that it could be Vijay's final full-fledged acting project before transitioning into active politics through his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

The film reportedly features Vijay in the role of a former police officer. Bobby Deol is expected to play the antagonist, while Pooja Hegde stars as the female lead. Music for the film has reportedly been composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
