JD Vance Iran war split with Trump follows Republican midterm election losses

US Vice President JD Vance publicly diverged from President Donald Trump’s defence of the Iran war after Republican midterm losses. In a social media post, Vance linked the party’s defeat to the unpopular conflict and urged supporters to weigh the political cost. Trump said he spoke with Vance and defended the war.

Vice President JD Vance publicly split from President Donald Trump’s defence of the Iran war on Wednesday. The break came after Republicans suffered heavy midterm losses. Vance used a long social media post to link the defeat to the unpopular conflict. The comments also came as Vance faced fresh attention on possible 2028 plans.

Vance splits with Trump on Iran

Vance had said Vance would decide after the election whether to run for president in 2028. Vance’s post blamed the conflict for the party’s setback. Vance wrote, "If youd like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next 6 years was worth it, then do so.\" Trump had made similar arguments while campaigning.

Iran war blamed for GOP midterm losses

Trump continued to defend the war as results came in, and again on Wednesday morning. During an unplanned walk with reporters to a White House ballroom under construction, Trump said, \"The Iran thing, we had to do and we continue to do it.\" Trump also said Trump spoke to Vance on Wednesday morning about the post.

Asked about Vance’s message, Trump said it was \"good\" and added, \"I know how he feels about it, and I think it was fine.\" Trump also said Trump expected the war to affect the midterm elections. Still, Trump again defended the decision to launch the conflict. Vance’s post stood out because Trump kept backing the war.

Polling data showed broad opposition to the military action. About 6 in 10 voters said the US made the wrong decision on Iran. That finding came from The AP Voter Poll survey of more than 100,000 voters. The poll also suggested the conflict was not the top issue for many voters.

Only about one-third of voters said the war in Iran was crucial to their vote for Congress. That was far below the roughly half who pointed to the cost of living. About half also cited government corruption as crucial. Even so, views on Iran split sharply along party lines.

Nearly all voters who backed the Democratic candidate in their US House race said the war was the wrong decision. Roughly 8 in 10 voters who backed the Republican candidate said it was the right decision. The survey also found many unhappy with the war supported Democrats. Still, the poll did not place Iran above household costs.

JD Vance and Iran war stance shifts

Vance had long pushed restraint in US military action overseas. Vance, a former Marine who served in Iraq, had criticised that earlier war. After becoming vice president, Vance said a Trump administration would avoid open-ended conflicts. That record made Vance’s post especially notable after the midterms.

After Trump launched the war with Iran this past spring, Vance spoke less about it. That silence marked a change for a politician known for forceful defences of Trump. Over the summer, Vance argued the conflict could be justified in some conditions. In an interview with conservative podcast host Megyn Kelly, Vance said, \"If we transformed the Middle East, this is fundamentally worth it.\"

After Democrats won control of both the House and the Senate on Tuesday, Vance pointed to several causes. Democrats defeated GOP candidates even in deep-red areas Trump carried two years ago. Vance wrote that \"the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone.\" Vance listed the war, costs, and other concerns.

Vance, Trump and Israel tensions linked to Iran war

Vance said Republican voters backed Democrats due to the war and the cost of living. Vance also cited America not being prioritised and the US relationship with Israel. On Israel, Vance had taken a different approach than Trump. Vance declined to endorse Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for reelection.

Vance also criticised members of Israel’s government in the summer. Vance said those officials opposed Trump’s efforts to resolve the war with Iran. The criticism added to signs of daylight between Vance and Trump on foreign policy. Vance’s post grouped Israel policy with other midterm concerns raised by voters.

Immigration crackdown raised in Iran war post

Vance also appeared to create some distance from the administration’s immigration crackdown. Vance had been a strong supporter of the administration’s immigration policies. Yet Vance wrote, \"Im open to the idea that we should change enforcement - by focusing more on businesses that hire illegal labour, for instance,\" while discussing enforcement priorities.

At the same time, Vance said Vance opposed proposals that would legalise people in the country unlawfully. Vance said Vance rejected politicians who might suggest amnesty. The split message matched Vance’s wider attempt to explain the GOP defeat. The comments came as Trump kept defending the Iran war decision.
