What To Expect From Vance And PM Modi's Meet?

Qian Feng, director of the research department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, told the Global Times that Vance may be pursuing multiple goals, from promoting a long-discussed bilateral trade agreement to seeking alignment on tariff issues. But he may find it difficult to achieve any significant results, especially given the US' domestic demand to reduce trade deficits and bring manufacturing back to the US, which runs counter to India's own "Make in India" initiative.

Trump had imposed a reciprocal tariff on around 150 countries, including. However, India faced a reciprocal tariff of 26%, much milder than its neighboring countries like China. However, amidst trade war with China, Trump has announced a 90-day breather to countries by pausing its reciprocal tariff, allowing countries to seek a resolution conversation with the USA.

When Trump announced the pause, brokerage Kotak Institutional Equities said, "We would assume that the US government will continue to pursue its stated strategic objectives of (1) a reduction in large trade deficits with other countries and (2) reshoring of manufacturing and an unstated objective of
a weaker US dollar. It has temporarily suspended reciprocal tariffs for 90 days for all countries (except for China) to work out trade deals, although the base tariff of 10% will remain."

For India, Kotak had said, it could be easier for India to deal with reciprocal tariffs by increasing imports from the US to protect its existing exports to the US. India's exports to the US are around 19% of its total exports, while its imports from the US are around 6.6% of its total imports. Imports from the US are dominated by energy, gems and jewelry, electronics and transport. The US would likely want India's imports to increase in agricultural goods (unlikely India will agree), commercial aircraft, defence goods, electronics, machinery, etc.

Hence, discussions related to energy and defence trade could be on the cards in this meet. Both India and US are aiming to double their trade to $500 billion between each other. Earlier, as per reports, the trade deal was about $190 billion between India and US.
