Jindal Stainless announced on Thursday that it has provided stainless steel for the Vande Bharat sleeper coaches. The company supplied high-strength tempered 301LN grade austenitic stainless steel for this significant government project, according to a statement.

The stainless steel used in these coaches offers better performance and durability. Its corrosion resistance ensures lower life-cycle costs, leading to long-term reliability. Additionally, it enhances passenger safety with superior crash and fire resistance properties, maintaining high safety standards in railway transport.
Energy Efficiency and Sustainability
Using stainless steel reduces each coach's weight by approximately two tonnes. This weight reduction improves energy efficiency and lowers the carbon footprint, aligning with modern rail transport's sustainability goals. The enhanced safety and aesthetic appeal of this new train symbolise innovation and engineering excellence of the Indian Railways, Jindal Stainless Managing Director Abhyuday Jindal said.
The first batch of coaches is scheduled for dispatch from BEML's Bengaluru plant on September 20, 2024. An official launch is anticipated by December 2024. The company had a consolidated annual turnover of Rs 38,562 crore in FY24 and is ramping up its facilities to reach 4.2 million tonnes of annual melting capacity by 2026.
Global Presence and Expansion
Jindal Stainless operates 16 stainless steel manufacturing and processing facilities in India and abroad, including Spain and Indonesia. As of March 2024, it has a worldwide network in 12 countries. This expansion supports its goal of increasing production capacity to meet growing demand.
The use of high-strength tempered stainless steel not only ensures durability but also contributes to the overall efficiency of the Vande Bharat sleeper coaches. This project highlights the company's commitment to quality and innovation in the railway sector.
The new coaches' design reflects a blend of safety, efficiency, and sustainability. By reducing weight and improving energy efficiency, these coaches represent a step forward in modern rail transport. The project's success underscores the importance of using advanced materials to enhance performance and safety in public transportation.
Jindal Stainless continues to play a crucial role in India's infrastructure development. Its involvement in the Vande Bharat project demonstrates its capability to supply high-quality materials for large-scale government initiatives. The company's global presence further strengthens its position as a leader in the stainless steel industry.
The upcoming launch of the Vande Bharat sleeper coaches marks a significant milestone for Indian Railways. With improved safety features and reduced environmental impact, these coaches set a new standard for future railway projects.
