Kerala Teachers' Protest Today on June 30: KSTA, AKSTU to Stage Statewide Agitations; Check Key Demands

Two major teachers' organisations in Kerala will stage separate protests on Tuesday, June 30. While one protest focuses on easing the burden on teachers assigned to Census duty and speeding up pending transfers, the other will voice opposition to the Centre's PM SHRI school scheme, adding fresh momentum to the ongoing debate over education policy in the state.

The demonstrations are expected to highlight both administrative challenges within government schools and the broader political differences between the Kerala government and the Centre over the future direction of school education.

Kerala Teachers Protest Today

Kerala Teachers Demand Relief From Census Duty

The Kerala School Teachers' Association (KSTA), affiliated with the Left, will organise a statewide chain protest across schools demanding that teachers engaged in Census work be relieved from their regular classroom responsibilities during the assignment.

The association has urged the state government to appoint temporary teachers on daily wages to fill the vacancies created while regular teachers perform Census-related duties. According to the union, this would ensure that students do not suffer academic losses and classroom teaching continues without interruption.

KSTA leaders argue that teachers should not be expected to balance government administrative assignments alongside their normal teaching workload, especially during the academic session when syllabus completion is critical.

Teachers Also Seek Immediate Transfer Orders

Apart from staffing concerns, the association has also demanded that teacher transfers delayed because of Census-related work be implemented without further delay.

According to the organisation, postponing transfers has affected staffing arrangements in several government and aided schools. It believes completing the transfer process at the earliest will help schools stabilise faculty strength for the ongoing academic year.

The union maintains that timely transfers and adequate staffing are essential for ensuring uninterrupted teaching and improving the overall functioning of public schools.

AKSTU to Hold Convention Against PM SHRI Scheme

In a separate program, the All Kerala School Teachers' Union (AKSTU) will organise a convention on secular education at Ayyankali Hall in Thiruvananthapuram at 4 pm.

The event is being held as a protest against the Pradhan Mantri Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme. Communist Party of India (CPI) State Secretary Binoy Viswam is scheduled to inaugurate the convention.

The organisation has said the event aims to express its opposition to what it describes as attempts to implement the National Education Policy through centrally sponsored school programmes.

Why Kerala Opposes PM SHRI Scheme

The PM SHRI scheme was launched by the Central government to develop selected schools into model institutions with upgraded infrastructure, modern learning facilities and improved teaching standards in line with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP).

However, Left parties and affiliated teachers' organisations in Kerala have consistently opposed the initiative. They argue that the scheme goes beyond infrastructure development and could become a mechanism for introducing the Centre's education policy framework in states that have not fully endorsed it.

Teacher organisations have maintained that education should remain consistent with Kerala's long-standing emphasis on secular and inclusive public schooling.
