Justice Surya Kant has taken office as the 53rd Chief Justice of India. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath at Rashtrapati Bhawan. He follows Justice B. R. Gavai, who left the position on 23 November. Justice Kant's term is set to last until 9 February 2027, giving him ample time to address important judicial matters.
During the ceremony, several dignitaries were present, including Vice President C P Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Narender Modi, and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Other key attendees included Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. The event was attended by many notable figures from the central government.

Justice Kant's extended tenure provides his bench with the opportunity to address numerous high-profile issues. His experience as a Supreme Court judge has seen him involved in major decisions. The upcoming years will likely see him handling a variety of critical topics, including constitutional law, cyber law, and criminal justice, as well as electoral integrity.
Justice Kant acknowledged the backlog of cases that need addressing in both the Supreme Court and lower courts. "One is arrears in SC. Other is arrears on pan-India basis, in High Courts or District Courts. I have to address that also." His plan involves tackling these challenges to improve the efficiency of the judiciary.
Justice Surya Kant's Background
Justice Kant was appointed to the Supreme Court on 24 May 2019. His educational background includes a graduation from Government Post Graduate College in Hisar in 1981, followed by a law degree from Maharshi Dayanand University in Rohtak in 1984. His legal expertise and experience will be instrumental during his term as Chief Justice.
