Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has announced plans to restructure the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to enhance aviation security and support the growing civil aviation sector in India. The minister made the announcement during a media briefing after reviewing the progress of the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport.

Increasing Workforce and Infrastructure
Scindia emphasized the need to expand the workforce and infrastructure of BCAS to keep pace with the increasing passenger traffic, fleet size, and number of airports in the country. He revealed that the ministry is looking at a template to restructure BCAS and plans to increase its personnel by 400-450.
The minister highlighted the importance of safety and security in the aviation sector and stated that these factors are paramount for the government. He mentioned that the capacity of air traffic controllers has been increased by 33-45% in the last 15 months, from 2,796 to 3,940, to support the growth of the sector.
Recruitment and Training of Air Traffic Controllers
Scindia provided an update on the recruitment and training of new air traffic controllers (ATCOs). He informed that the hiring process for ATCOs is underway, and most of the positions have been filled. The training process is ongoing, and the deployment of these new ATCOs is expected by October-November 2023.
The restructuring of BCAS and the increase in its workforce are significant steps towards ensuring the safety and security of passengers and enhancing the overall efficiency of the civil aviation sector in India. These measures will help accommodate the growing demand for air travel and support the continued expansion of the industry.
