Civil aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia reviewed the self-monitoring mechanism for airfares and OTP with airlines, emphasizing keeping fares in check on select routes and enhancing on-time performance.

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia conducted a comprehensive review of the self-monitoring mechanism for airfares implemented by individual airlines and stressed the importance of maintaining reasonable fares on select routes. The advisory group meeting also addressed airlines' on-time performance (OTP), and Scindia directed the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to reexamine technical specifications at VFR-equipped airports to enhance OTP.
Discussions with Airline Advisory Group
Scindia convened a meeting with the airline advisory group, which included representatives from various carriers, such as Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan. The discussions centered around finding solutions to improve OTP and airfares on specific sectors, as well as examining the in-house practices adopted by each airline. While specific details regarding the discussions on airfares and routes were not immediately available, concerns have been raised about the rising trend in air ticket prices.
Monitoring Airfares and Connectivity
The minister reviewed the self-monitoring mechanism employed by airlines with respect to airfares and emphasized the need to control fares on select routes. The DGCA Tariff Monitoring Unit has been established to regularly monitor airfares on randomly selected routes. Additionally, Scindia urged airlines to submit their individual aircraft induction and deployment plans for the next six months to bolster connectivity between tier 2 and tier 3 cities with international destinations, including Ayodhya and Surat.
Support for Small Aircraft Operators
In a separate advisory group meeting, Scindia pledged full support to entrepreneurs of small aircraft operators and helicopter services to expand their operations. The minister committed to streamlining processes and approvals for participating operators. A special cell for helicopters and small aircraft will be established once the DGCA increases its manpower capacity. Representatives from Alliance Air, Indiaone Air, Heritage Aviation, BAOA, Air Taxi, and PHL, among others, attended the meeting.
Jyotiraditya Scindia's review of airfares, OTP, and connectivity initiatives demonstrates the government's commitment to ensuring affordable air travel, improving on-time performance, and enhancing regional connectivity. The discussions with the airline advisory group and the focus on supporting small aircraft operators underscore the government's efforts to foster a robust and accessible aviation sector in India.
