Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal inaugurated the Kalughat Inland Water Transport (IWT) Terminal and two community jetties in Bihar on Thursday. The projects are expected to bring all-round economic prosperity to the riverine community of the state, according to an official statement.
Enhancing Capacity and Connectivity
The IWT terminal, constructed at a cost of Rs 82.48 crore, will significantly enhance the capacity of the region's transportation network. It has the potential to handle 77,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) annually. Strategically located on the north bank of the River Ganga in Bihar's Saran District, Kalughat emerges as a vital nexus in the region's transportation network.
The terminal will have direct road connectivity with NH-19, making it a critical location for the transportation of cargo originating or destined for the hinterland of North Bihar. This connectivity will further boost economic activities in the region.
Part of Jal Marg Vikas Project
The development of the IWT ecosystem for NW-1, including the construction of Multimodal Terminals (MMTs) and Intermodal Terminals (IMTs) for cargo handling, is part of the Jal Marg Vikas Project. This project aims to enhance the capacity and efficiency of inland water transportation in India.
Maritime India Vision and Amrit Kaal Vision
The inauguration of the Kalughat IWT Terminal aligns with the government's ambitious plans outlined in the Maritime India Vision (MIV) 2030. The vision aims to elevate the share of Inland Water Transport (IWT) to 5% and transform India into a global maritime power.
Furthermore, the Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 envisions operationalizing 50 waterways by 2047. This will facilitate efficient transportation networks nationwide and contribute to the overall economic growth and development of the country.
The inauguration of the Kalughat IWT Terminal and community jetties in Bihar marks a significant step towards enhancing the transportation infrastructure and economic prosperity of the region. These projects align with the government's vision of promoting inland water transport and transforming India into a maritime leader.
