The Karnataka government has officially announced a new movie ticket price cap that will directly impact cinema lovers across the state. From September 12, 2025, movie tickets in Karnataka cannot cost more than Rs 200 (excluding taxes) in theatres and multiplexes. This decision was taken under the Karnataka Cinema Rules, 2025, which modifies the older Karnataka Cinema (Control) Rules, 2014.

Karnataka movie ticket price cap explained
The Rs 200 cap on movie ticket prices in Karnataka applies to all films, irrespective of the language or star cast. However, there is one exemption: multi-screen premium cinemas with 75 seats or fewer are not bound by the cap. These smaller luxury theatres can continue charging higher prices.
The government had first came up with this idea in July 2025 through a draft notification and invited feedback from stakeholders before finalizing the rules. The authority for this move comes from Section 19 of the Karnataka Cinema (Control) Act, 1964.
This is not the first time the Karnataka government has intervened in cinema pricing. Back in 2017, the Siddaramaiah government had also capped movie ticket rates at Rs 200. However, the move faced legal challenges and was later scrapped following a court order.
Why has the Karnataka govt capped movie ticket prices?
The main reason behind the movie ticket price cap in Karnataka is to make cinema outings more affordable for the common man. At a time when multiplex chains often charge Rs 400-Rs 600 per ticket for blockbuster films, this cap is expected to increase footfalls and bring more families back to theatres. The government also believes this will support the Kannada film industry, which often struggles to get prime time slots in big multiplexes dominated by Bollywood and Hollywood films.
How will multiplexes handle the Rs 200 ticket cap?
Multiplex operators may worry about reduced revenue from ticket sales. But ticketing is not their only income source. In fact, multiplex revenues in India largely depend on three things, Ticket sales, Food & beverage sales and advertising
