Bengaluru News: Commuters in Karnataka are likely to face yet another cost burden starting May 2025, as private bus operators have announced a big 15% fare hike. This decision has been taken in response to the recent increase in diesel prices and toll charges, which have escalated operational costs for private transport providers across the state.
Why Are Karnataka Private Bus Fares Being Increased?
The Private Bus Owners Association confirmed that starting in May, ticket prices will be increased by Rs 2 per stage, which translates to a nearly 15% hike overall.
"We have no choice but to raise fares. Diesel and toll rates have both gone up, and this directly affects our day-to-day operations," said a representative of the association.

How the Fare Hike Will Affect Daily Commuters and Families?
The hike in private bus fares couldn't have come at a worse time for the people of Karnataka. With the cost of living already going up thanks to rising prices of food, fuel, and other essentials, this added burden on travel expenses is likely to hit common people the hardest. Whether it's daily office-goers, students travelling to college, or families heading to their hometowns during festivals, almost everyone will now have to pay more for the same journey.
For many households, especially those from middle- and lower-income groups, this extra Rs 2 per stage in bus fares might seem small on paper, but it quickly adds up. For example, a commuter who takes two buses a day over a week could end up spending hundreds of rupees more each month - money that could have been used for groceries, school supplies, or electricity bills.
Students and working professionals who rely on private buses for long-distance travel, especially in areas where government buses don't operate frequently, are particularly worried. Many say that private buses are their only reliable option, and with fares going up, they feel stuck.
Private Bus Operators Support Statewide Bandh: Services May Be Hit
As if rising fares weren't enough, there's also the possibility that private buses might stop running altogether, at least temporarily.
The Private Bus Owners Association has publicly supported the bandh (strike) called by the Lorry Owners Association, which is also protesting the steep rise in diesel and toll charges as per reports. In a recent statement, they said they are still deciding whether private bus services will also be suspended as part of the protest. This means that if an agreement isn't reached soon, bus services could be disrupted across Karnataka, leaving thousands of commuters stranded.
Public Reactions to the Bus Fare Hike
The fare hike has sparked widespread criticism from the public. Many commuters feel that they are being taken advantage of, especially since this price hike comes just before major holidays. Social media is flooded with angry posts, with many calling on the Karnataka government to step in and control fare hikes during periods of inflation. Some are even demanding that the Transport Department set clear guidelines to ensure fair pricing and protect public interest.
