The popular Karnataka Shakti scheme may get an upgrade as the state government is set to introduce personalised smart cards based on the National Common Mobility Card (NCMC) system.

Under the new system, beneficiaries will receive a Shakti Smart Card, which will replace the current manual verification process and enable easy validation through digital means. The initiative is expected to reduce misuse and streamline travel across state-run buses.
The Shakti scheme in Karnataka was launched in June 2023 and gives free bus travel to women on state-run buses; by January 2026, beneficiaries had taken more than 660 crore free journeys as per official data.
What is the Shakti Smart Card & How It Works
The proposed Shakti smart card in Karnataka will continue to offer free bus travel benefits for eligible women, but with added convenience. The card will function as an NCMC-based mobility card, giving smoother access across transport services.
With this system women can travel freely on buses operated by all four state transport corporations. The Digital validation will replace manual ticket checks. Also real-time data on usage will also be captured.
Rollout Plan: Phased Implementation Ahead
As per reports, officials have confirmed that the project is being executed through a tender process, with a transaction advisor and system integrator to be appointed. The Shakti smart card rollout will happen in phases over the coming months.
