Karnataka Transport Strike 2025: Karnataka Roads Go Silent as Truckers Stage Protest; Full Story Inside

Since Monday, April 15, more than six lakh trucks and other transport vehicles have been off the road due to the Karnataka transport strike, which has completely stopped the movement of goods truck throughout the state. The Federation of Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents Association (FOKSLOAA) has called for an indefinite transport strike in Karnataka in protest of recent announcements by the state government regarding the fuel price hike, problems with toll collection, and other concerns.

Why Are Truck Drivers in Karnataka on Strike?

Truckers and lorry owners are demanding a rollback of the recent fuel price hike in Karnataka, which saw petrol prices rise by Rs. 3 per litre and diesel by Rs. 3.02. The hike in fuel price in Karnataka was because the government decided to increase the VAT on fuel. In the last few months, diesel prices have shot up by Rs 5 per litre, which has significantly increased operational costs for truck owners.

Toll Plazas and Checkposts Also a Major Concern

Another major pain point for the transport community is the issue of state toll plazas. As per reports by Deccan Herald, the association is demanding the abolition of 18 toll gates across Karnataka, claiming that they have become a source of harassment and extortion. Despite the implementation of GST (Goods and Services Tax), truckers say border checkposts are still active, leading to confusion and long wait times. The association members also stated that they have raised multiple concerns to the authorities, but no resolution was met.

Essential Services Exempted, But Supply Chains Likely to Be Hit

The transport strike in Karnataka exempted essential services vehicles but the movement of other goods across Karnataka is expected to take a big hit. The Karnataka transport strike is expected to cause huge delays in supply chains, especially for those sectors that are majorly dependent on road transport, like construction, retail, and logistics.

The FOKSLOAA president, G R Shanmugappa, was quoted by Deccan Herald saying that "big transport vehicles carrying stuff like cement, steel, stones, jelly, and soil are also off the roads starting now. Even interstate trucks that bring in goods from other states are joining the strike. He also mentioned that trucks that usually bring onions and garlic from outside Karnataka are going to stop too."

What Are the Major Demands of Karnataka Truckers?

The truck owners are mostly looking forward to the rollback of the fuel price hike in Karnataka, which is an added burden in their business.

Another demand is to abolish 18 toll plazas across the state which are causing huge problems for the truckers .
Karnataka truckers are subjected to harassment and delays at border checkposts which need to be addressed.

Additionally, reducing VAT on diesel and petrol would also be highly helpful.

These truckers expect to receive fair treatment at toll gates, which still remains a big issue.

Impact of the Karnataka Lorry Owners Strike

This Karnataka truckers strike in 2025 could lead to rising prices of goods if it continues for a long period of time and if no solution is met. With lakhs of trucks off the roads, industries relying on timely goods delivery may face logistics delays and increased transportation costs. The Karnataka transport strike will also bring attention to the broader concerns of the transport and logistics sector in India, which often bears the brunt of policy changes without adequate support.
