Karnataka Weather Alert: IMD Predicts Heavy Rain, Lightning & 40 KMPH Winds In Some Districts Till May 14

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh Karnataka weather alert warning of thunderstorms, lightning across several parts of the state over the next few days. According to the latest IMD bulletin issued on May 11th, multiple districts in coastal Karnataka, north interior Karnataka and south interior Karnataka are likely to witness unstable weather conditions till May 14.

The weather department has also released a special nowcast warning for districts including Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Davanagere and Chitradurga, cautioning residents about moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40 kmph.

IMD Karnataka Weather Warning Till May 14

As per the sub-division-wise weather warning chart released by the IMD Bengaluru centre, the following regions are expected to experience thunderstorms and lightning, squalls and gusty winds, and Moderate rainfall activity.

Coastal Karnataka Weather Alert

The IMD has forecast thunderstorm and lightning activity in coastal Karnataka from May 11 to May 14. Conditions are expected to improve from May 15 onward, with no major warning currently issued for the following days.

North Interior Karnataka Under Yellow Alert

North Interior Karnataka will be under weather watch till May 14 due to the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds. The region is likely to witness intermittent rainfall and cloudy skies over the coming days.

South Interior Karnataka Weather Update

South Interior Karnataka districts are also expected to receive rainfall along with thunderstorm activity till May 14. Bengaluru and nearby regions may witness cloudy weather, short rain spells and gusty winds during evening hours.

IMD Nowcast Warning For Karnataka Districts

In a separate nowcast bulletin for Monday evening on May 11, the IMD warned of Light to moderate rain/thundershowers with gusty winds (30-40 kmph) likely to occur at isolated places.

The districts likely to be affected include Uttara Kannada, Udupi, Davanagere & Chitradurga

The department warned that the weather conditions could lead to temporary disruption of electricity in some areas along with minor traffic disruptions. Adverse weather can cause damage to weak trees and kacha houses and even possible damage to harvested crops kept in open areas.

IMD Advisory For Residents

The weather office has advised people to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity. Residents have been asked to:

  • Stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel
  • Keep windows and doors closed during strong winds
  • Avoid taking shelter under trees
  • Unplug electrical and electronic appliances during lightning activity
  • Avoid water bodies and open fields during thunderstorms
  • Drive carefully due to low visibility and slippery roads

Rainfall Activity Likely To Continue

According to the latest Karnataka weather forecast, pre-monsoon activity is strengthening across the state, leading to frequent evening showers and thunderstorm development. Weather experts believe the rainfall activity may continue intermittently in several districts over the next week.
