Kashmir Terror Attack: J&K Govt Announces Rs. 10 Lac Compensation for Victims' Families, Rs. 2 Lac for Injured

The Pahalgam terror attack has caused massive grief and fear among locals and tourists after 28 people were killed and many were injured. The situation has questioned security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir alike but also brought attention to the continuing security challenges in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has announced financial assistance for the victims and their families. The government will provide an ex gratia of Rs.10 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the attack. Additionally, those who were seriously injured will receive Rs. 2 lakh, while individuals with minor injuries will be granted Rs. 1 lakh.

The announcement was made by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) via a post on X. "No amount of money can ever compensate for the loss of a loved one, but as a mark of support, we extend this assistance," the statement said.

Alongside financial support, the J&K government has arranged for the dignified transportation of the deceased victims to their hometowns. Authorities have also ensured that injured persons receive the best possible medical treatment in hospitals across the region.

J&K CM Omar Abdulla was quoted by PTI," "What can be said? I condemn this; I express my condolences. The tourists had come to have a good time; they died. A poor labourer had left home to earn; he died. I have heard that he tried to confront the militants and tried to snatch the gun, and then he was attacked. We will have to take care of the family members. We are with them and help them."

Tourism Impact: Tourists Cut Trips Short, Flights Surge

Following the attack, many tourists in Kashmir Valley have shortened their stay, causing a spike in demand for flights from Srinagar. In response, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked airlines to increase flight frequency and to waive cancellation and rescheduling charges for passengers. Airlines have been advised to provide all necessary assistance to tourists facing travel disruptions due to the heightened security situation in the region.

Increased Security Measures in Kashmir

The Pahalgam attack is one of the most significant terror incidents in the region since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019.
Visuals from the region show deserted streets in what is usually a busy tourist area. Authorities have stepped up surveillance and checkpoints, and local police are working closely with the army and paramilitary forces. In reaction to the terror attack, several political and social organisations have called for a Jammu bandh (shutdown) to protest the incident and demand justice for the victims.
