Karnataka may get a public holiday on June 27 the state celebrates the birth anniversary of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, the founder of Bengaluru, while a proposal to declare a public holiday for Kempegowda Jayanti has been placed before the Karnataka government, no official notification has been issued yet.

The suggestion for June 27 public holiday was made during a high-level preparatory meeting chaired by Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar.

The Karnataka government has announced that this year's Nadaprabhu Kempegowda Jayanti celebrations will be held on June 27 at the newly developed Kempegowda Layout in Bengaluru.

The event is scheduled to begin at 11:30 AM and will feature several government initiatives to honor the legacy of Bengaluru's founder.

As part of the celebrations, the government plans to launch a massive 15 lakh sapling plantation drive across Bengaluru and Inaugurate a newly constructed road inside Kempegowda Layout.

Will June 27 Be a Public Holiday in Karnataka?

The Karnataka government has not officially declared June 27, 2026, as a public holiday, and the date does not currently appear in the official Karnataka government holiday calendar. Any decision regarding a holiday will require a formal government notification.

Residents, students, government employees and private institutions are advised to wait for an official circular before assuming that June 27 will be a holiday.

Major Projects Announced for Kempegowda Jayanti

Apart from the celebrations, D.K. Shivakumar announced several initiatives. Among the key announcements are:

-A Town Planning College named after Kempegowda to be established within the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) campus.

-A Kempegowda Theme Park near Kempegowda International Airport in Devanahalli, which has been completed and is awaiting inauguration.

Other Suggestions Before the Karnataka Government

Several additional proposals were discussed during the meeting, including:
-Construction of an International Kempegowda Park.
-Establishment of a Kempegowda Museum.
-Setting up Kempegowda Bhavans in every district of Karnataka.
-Development of Kempegowda's burial site as a heritage destination.
-Restoration of Kempegowda Fort through a proposed Rs .100 crore conservation project.
-Formation of a Kempegowda Award Selection Committee to recognise individuals contributing to society.

These proposals are currently under consideration and have not yet received final government approval.
