Mark Twain Award at the Kennedy Center: Bill Maher ceremony to feature Mellencamp, Leno, and Cummings

The Kennedy Center has confirmed guest speakers for Bill Maher’s Mark Twain Award for American Humor ceremony on June 28, including John Mellencamp, Jay Leno, and Whitney Cummings. Members were offered ticket packages from USD 99 to USD 1,500 with reception options. The venue is again identifying itself as the Kennedy Center following a federal court ruling on naming.

Bill Maher is set to receive the Mark Twain Award for American Humor on June 28. The ceremony is due to take place at the Kennedy Center. John Mellencamp, Jay Leno and Whitney Cummings are among the planned guest speakers. The centre shared the speaker list with members in a Monday email.

The message to members also set out ticket options for the event. Packages started at USD 99 for a seat reservation. Higher tiers cost USD 1,500 and more. Those premium packages included seating and entry to pre-show and post-show receptions.

Kennedy Center name change and Mark Twain Award event

The same announcement showed a shift in how the venue described itself. The email referred to the Kennedy Center, not the Trump Kennedy Center. The change also appeared on the centre’s home page. The wording followed a court ruling tied to the name used publicly.

Last month, a federal judge said the board acted illegally by adding President Donald Trump’s name. Congress named the venue in 1964 for President John F. Kennedy. The law, often called the centre’s organic statute, was cited in the decision. The judge said only Congress could change the name.

"The Kennedy Center’s organic statute makes crystal clear that the Center is to be named for President Kennedy, and it cannot bear any other formal name or public memorial based on the Board’s unilateral say-so. Congress gave the Kennedy Center its name, and only Congress can change it,\" wrote US District Judge Christopher Cooper.

A Kennedy spokesperson had suggested an appeal was possible after the ruling. However, the centre later received guidance from its general counsel. An email sent last week listed steps for cooperation with the decision. That guidance included removing Trump’s name from use.

Trump and Kennedy Center board actions and Mark Twain Award context

Trump had mostly paid little attention to the Kennedy Center during a first term. Later, Trump made it part of a push against what Trump called woke influences. Trump removed leadership and replaced trustees with supporters. Trump also presided over major events, including the Kennedy Honors ceremony.

Some artists responded by dropping planned appearances at the centre. Those cancellations included Issa Rae, Bela Fleck and Renee Fleming. The moves came as debate grew over leadership and direction. The cancellations were among the public signs of tension around the venue.

Maher is the 27th person to receive the Twain Award. Past winners include Leno, Steve Martin and Tina Fey. Maher and Trump have traded public attacks in recent years. Still, Maher has often appealed to some Republicans as an independent voice.

Maher often criticises Hollywood as woke and hosts wide-ranging interviews. Guests have included Jane Fonda, Ben Shapiro and Charlie Kirk. The list has also included Woody Allen, who faced cultural backlash. This mix helped shape how Maher was viewed across political lines.

Mark Twain Award guest list and other speakers

Other expected guests include Louis C.K. and Stephen A. Smith. Louis C.K. has toured regularly since 2017 reports alleged sexual misconduct. Stephen A. Smith is known for blunt remarks on sport and wider issues. Those comments have fuelled disputes with Jaylen Brown and Keith Olbermann.

The June 28 event is due to bring together comedians and other public figures around Maher’s award. The guest list includes musicians and television personalities, alongside past Twain honourees. The ceremony also arrives as the Kennedy Center adjusts its public name after the court decision. Ticket packages remain available through member offers.
