Kerala's Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Highlights State's Role in India's Deep Tech Ambitions at Huddle Global 2024

Kerala is poised to significantly contribute to India's ambition of becoming a global leader in deep tech, with promising investment opportunities emerging. This was highlighted by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan during the inauguration of Huddle Global 2024, a major startup festival organised by the Kerala Startup Mission at Kovalam. The Emerging Technology Hub (ETH) initiative is central to this vision, focusing on five high-growth sectors.

Keralas Role in Indias Deep Tech Sector

The ETH initiative aims to develop futuristic products in Food & Agriculture, Space Technology, Renewable Energy, Digital Media & Entertainment, and Healthcare & Life Sciences. It is planned as a public-private partnership located on a three-acre campus in Technocity, Thiruvananthapuram, with an estimated cost of Rs 350 crore. The Chief Minister encouraged global investors to consider investing in this innovative venture.

Startup Ecosystem Growth

Kerala's startup ecosystem has grown impressively since 2016. The state now hosts over 6,100 startups, creating more than 62,000 jobs and attracting Rs 5,800 crore in investments. Despite being rated the best in India, early-stage capital remains crucial for further growth. The Chief Minister urged High Networth Individuals in each district to form Angel Funds, inspired by successful models like the Kerala Angel Network.

Entrepreneurship initiatives such as LEAP (Launch, Empower, Accelerate & Prosper) and IEDC have empowered aspiring entrepreneurs across the state. These programs enable startups to be established near homes or educational institutions. The Department of Higher Education's directive for all institutions to set up Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Development Centres (IEDCs) will be extended to health and agricultural departments.

Innovation and Infrastructure

The Freedom Squares initiative aims to become innovation hubs in every district. Kerala Startup Mission has been chosen as a project management unit for the $200 million Kera Project funded by the World Bank. Additionally, an International Market Acceleration Programme (IMAP) will involve the Indian diaspora in scaling local startups globally through investment and mentorship.

To address space constraints faced by IT and other sectors, Kerala has introduced a land pooling model. This model, along with Work Near Home Centres, will provide adequate space for tech companies and startups. An upcoming Invest Kerala Global Summit will feature an Investment Pitch Session dedicated to startups.

The Chief Minister also mentioned an ambitious project blending technology and tourism. He emphasised exploring AI's potential to create solutions for societal challenges. "Though AI is opening up incredible opportunities for innovation," he said, "it is important to explore its transformative potential in creating solutions that address the unique challenges of our society."
