Kerala Piravi Significance & History
Kerala Piravi literally means the birth of Kerala. The day is celebrated as the formation of the state on November 1, 1956, after the reorganisation of Indian states as per language.
Before India's independence, the Malayalam-speaking population was spread across different administrative regions, primarily Travancore, Cochin and Malabar.
Travancore and Cochin were merged to form Travancore-Cochin in 1949, while the Malabar region remained part of the Madras Presidency.
After independence, demands for the creation of states based on linguistic identities started rising. Hence on November 1, 1956, the state of Kerala was officially formed by bringing together Travancore-Cochin and the Malabar district, along with the Kasaragod taluk of South Canara. Since then, November 1 has been celebrated as Kerala Piravi every year.
