Kerala School Holiday Tomorrow? IMD Red Alert, Wayanad Landslide Trigger Holiday Buzz Across State

The weather in Kerala has turned fiery with rainfall lashing the state over the past few days. IMD has forecast heavy rainfall over Kerala and Mahe on July 7 to 8, with isolated very heavy rainfall also likely.

The weather department also has a Red alert for Wayanad and Kozhikode. The Wayanad red alert was issued at 12:30 pm today after a landslide at the Kalladi tunnel project site around 11 am occurred which has left one confirmed dead, 7 missing, and 7 injured workers hospitalised.

A mudslide struck the under-construction Anakkampoyil-Kalladi-Meppadi tunnel road project, which connects Wayanad and Kozhikode near Meenakshi Bridge at Kalladi, close to Meppadi.

Mananthavady, on the other hand, is also under red alert after receiving 64 mm of rain and Vythiri received 123 mm during the day.

Orange alert has been issued for Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod, where very heavy rain of 115-204 mm is expected in the next 24 hrs.

Yellow alert has been put forth across many northern and central districts today, with high-speed winds along the coast reaching up to 60 kmph and rough sea conditions; fishermen are being advised to stay off the water.

School, college holiday In Kerala on July 8

Amidst the deteriorating condition of the Kerala weather, School, college & Office goers are hoping for the holiday announcements for Wednesday, July 8 since the heavy rainfall has already disrupted day to day life.

Given the red alert and the fatal landslide in Wayanad today, a holiday declaration for Wayanad and possibly Kozhikode tomorrow is quite likely however no formal announcements have been made yet by the officials.

Kerala monsoon update

Monsoon reached Kerala on schedule in late early June and the state is currently under active wet phase with rotating orange/yellow alerts across Malabar-region districts, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod, Wayanad, Malappuram at least till July 9
July is the coolest of the hot monsoon months in Kerala where the average temperature for the is around 27-29°C and 22-24°C at night, with heavy humidity because of the strong monsoon currents over the Arabian Sea.
