The Kerala government has sanctioned the Kerala Health System Improvement Programme, securing a loan of Rs 2,424.28 crore from the World Bank. This decision was made during a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The initiative will be executed under the Programme for Results (P for R) model.

The programme's primary aim is to elevate living standards and life expectancy in Kerala. It seeks to help residents avoid preventable diseases, accidents, and early deaths. The focus is on ensuring the welfare of economically disadvantaged groups.
Resilient Healthcare Systems
The project intends to build resilient healthcare systems that deliver value-based care. It aims to address Kerala's changing demographic and epidemiological challenges. The government highlighted the need for improved coordination among state departments to tackle emerging threats like climate change.
Key goals include creating a comprehensive ecosystem to prevent non-communicable diseases and strengthening healthcare infrastructure. The project also plans to adopt better strategies for managing climate-related health risks and responding to new health threats effectively.
Emergency and Elderly Care
Enhancing emergency and trauma care services is another priority. The plan includes establishing a 24x7 emergency response network with ambulances and a trauma registry. In elderly care, local self-government institutions will be integrated to address both current and future challenges.
The project aims to reimagine healthcare systems by boosting human resource capabilities and increasing resource allocation. It also focuses on universalising digital health applications and expanding public health funding.
Special attention will be given to providing efficient healthcare services to those living below the poverty line. This emphasis ensures that vulnerable populations receive the necessary support.
This comprehensive approach aims to improve Kerala's healthcare delivery systems, making them more efficient and responsive to the state's needs.
