Kerala Thiruvonam Bumper 2026: Why Signing Your Ticket Right Away Could Save You Rs.30 Crore
This year's Kerala Onam Bumper carries the biggest jackpot the state lottery has ever offered, but the prize money is only worth something if the winning ticket ends up in the right hands. That is where a small, often-ignored step comes in - signing the ticket the moment it is bought.
The prize on the line

A Kerala lottery ticket works like a bearer instrument until it carries the buyer's name. Under the Kerala Paper Lotteries (Regulation) Rules, the prize winner is required to write their name, address and signature on the reverse of the ticket at the time of claiming. But lottery officials and legal guides consistently flag a simpler, earlier habit as the real safeguard: sign the back of the ticket as soon as you buy it, not after you have checked the result. An unsigned ticket that is lost, misplaced or stolen can be claimed by whoever produces it at the counter, because the department has no way of tying it to the original buyer. Once a name is written on the back, that link exists from day one, and a family member, co-worker or stranger who comes across the ticket cannot walk away with someone else's fortune.
The claim window has changed
The rules were also amended in 2024, and the change matters for anyone still going by the older 30-day figure that circulates widely online. Winning tickets must now be surrendered to the Director, District Lottery Officer or Lottery Sub Officer within 90 days of the draw, along with a duly filled Form V, though prizes below Rs.10,000 do not need the form. After the deadline lapses, the prize amount reverts to the government, so the extended window is a cushion, not an excuse to delay.
What a winner needs to submit
Alongside the original signed ticket, a claimant needs two passport-size photographs attested by a gazetted officer or notary, a self-attested photocopy of both sides of the ticket, proof of identity such as a PAN card, Aadhaar, passport, ration card or driving licence, and bank account details for the payout. Prize claims up to Rs.10,000 are cleared by a junior superintendent, those up to Rs.10 lakh by the District Lottery Officer, and larger sums move up to the Deputy Director and the Director. A flat 30% tax is deducted at source on any prize above Rs.10,000, and agents who sell winning tickets typically receive a commission cut from the payout.
The takeaway before ticket sales close
Buying a bumper ticket is the easy part. Kerala's own lottery guides and legal explainers are unanimous on the point that follows: sign it immediately, note the series and number somewhere safe, and keep it away from damage or loss. With a Rs.30 crore first prize on the table this Onam, that one habit is the difference between a life-changing win and a ticket someone else walks away with.
