King Charles III US state visit proceeds after security review amid UK US political strain

King Charles III has arrived in the United States for a four-day state visit linked to the nation’s 250th anniversary. After a shooting at a Washington dinner attended by President Donald Trump, Buckingham Palace ordered a security review and confirmed the visit will proceed. The trip unfolds amid renewed UK US relations strain involving Iran policy and Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

King Charles III arrived in the United States on Monday as relations across the Atlantic faced fresh strain. The four-day state visit aimed to mark the United States 250th anniversary. Security also drew attention after a shooting at a Washington dinner on Saturday. The dinner was attended by President Donald Trump.

King Charles III US visit reviewed

The shooting led to a late security review before the trip. Buckingham Palace said the king is greatly relieved to hear that the president, first lady and all guests have been unharmed. After completing the review, the palace said the visit would go ahead as planned. Officials did not announce changes to the schedule.

UK-US special relationship and security review

The visit was also meant to underline the US-UK special relationship. Yet political tensions had already raised the stakes for the British monarchs visit. Disagreements between the UK government and Trump included the Iran war. Those disputes added pressure to a trip designed around shared history and symbolism.

Trump criticised Prime Minister Keir Starmer in recent weeks. Trump said Starmer was unwilling to join US military attacks on Iran. Trump also dismissed Britains leader as not Winston Churchill. Churchill was the World War II prime minister who coined the phrase special relationship for the UK-US bond.

UK-US special relationship and NATO rift

The dispute formed part of a broader split with several NATO partners. Trump has called some United States NATO allies cowards and useless. Trump linked the criticism to the lack of support for action against Iran. The disagreement fed concern in Britain ahead of the kings meetings and ceremonies.

Another point of tension involved the Falkland Islands in the south Atlantic. A leaked Pentagon email suggested the US could reassess support for the UKs sovereignty. Britain and Argentina fought a 1982 war over the islands. The islands are also known as the Islas Malvinas.

UK-US special relationship and Trump remarks on Charles

Trump has argued the political chill would not shape the royal visit. "Charles has nothing to do with that,\" Trump said in March, meaning NATO. Trump has also spoken positively about the king. Trump has repeatedly referred to the monarch as his friend and a great guy.

Trump has continued to mention \"his amazing trip to the UK in September with first lady Melania Trump for an unprecedented second state visit.\" Prime Minister Keir Starmer delivered the kings invitation in the Oval Office. That happened five weeks after Trump returned to office. The move was seen as a public effort to woo Trump.

During the earlier trip, the UK royal family arranged formal events at Windsor Castle. The programme included scarlet-clad guardsmen and brass bands. A banquet was also held at the castle. The planned US visit includes a state dinner and several engagements across the week.

\"President Trump has always had great respect for King Charles, and their relationship was further strengthened by the presidents historic visit to the United Kingdom last year,\" White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told The Associated Press. \"The president looks forward to a special visit by Their Majesties, which will include a beautiful state dinner and multiple events throughout the week.\"

Trump told the BBC the visit could help ease the wider strain. \"Hes fantastic. Hes a fantastic man. Absolutely the answer is yes,\" the president said. The palace said the trip would proceed after the security review. The visit remained focused on ceremony and the anniversary marking.
