Kotak Mahindra Bank to Acquire Standard Chartered India's Rs 4,100-Crore Personal Loan Portfolio

Kotak Mahindra Bank has announced its plan to acquire Standard Chartered Bank's personal loan portfolio, valued at Rs 4,100 crore. The acquisition will include all of Standard Chartered's personal loans classified as "standard advances." This transaction is expected to be completed within three months, according to a statement from Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Kotak Mahindra Bank Acquires Personal Loan Portfolio

The bank described the acquired portfolio as a "high-quality loan book," aligning with its strategy to focus on customer-centric growth and scale transformation. This move follows a similar transaction two years ago when Citi sold its retail business to Axis Bank, a larger competitor of Kotak.

Regulatory Challenges and Market Context

In April, Kotak Mahindra Bank faced regulatory restrictions that prevented it from onboarding new customers through online and mobile banking channels. This acquisition comes amid regulatory concerns about the risks associated with unsecured loans like personal loans. The regulator has increased risk weights to discourage lenders from expanding these portfolios.

Despite these challenges, Kotak Mahindra Bank's stock closed 0.32% higher at Rs 1,869.80 on the BSE. This was slightly better than the benchmark index's gain of 0.27%. The bank remains focused on strategic growth despite regulatory hurdles and market conditions.

The acquisition reflects Kotak Mahindra Bank's commitment to expanding its loan portfolio while navigating regulatory landscapes. By acquiring Standard Chartered's personal loans, the bank aims to enhance its market position and customer offerings in the financial sector.
