Kouri Richins sentencing: Utah court orders life without parole in fentanyl murder of Eric Richins

A Utah judge sentenced Kouri Richins to life without parole after a jury convicted her of aggravated murder for fatally poisoning her husband, Eric Richins, with fentanyl in 2022. Jurors also found her guilty of additional felonies, including insurance fraud, forgery, and attempted murder linked to an earlier poisoning attempt.

A Utah judge ruled on Wednesday that Kouri Richins will spend life in prison without parole. Richins was convicted in March of aggravated murder for killing Eric Richins in 2022. Prosecutors said Richins mixed fentanyl into Eric Richins’ drink at their home near Park City. The dose was five times the lethal amount.

Jurors also convicted Richins on four other felonies in the same case. Those counts included insurance fraud, forgery and attempted murder. Prosecutors said Richins tried to poison Eric Richins on Valentines Day weeks earlier. The attempt involved a sandwich that contained fentanyl. The defence said it will appeal.

Kouri Richins murder case: Judge cites public safety

Judge Richard Mrazi said Richins should never be released. "A person convicted of those things is simply too dangerous to ever be free,\" Mrazi said. The sentencing hearing fell on the day Eric Richins would have turned 44. Richins spoke in court wearing a lime green jail uniform. \"Please just dont give up on me,\" Richins said.

Richins disputed the jury’s decision during the hearing. Richins said the verdict was \"an absolute lie\". Prosecutors described Richins, 35, as a real estate agent with a house-flipping business. Prosecutors said Richins was millions in debt. Prosecutors also said Richins planned a future with another man.

Kouri Richins murder case: Insurance and money claims

Prosecutors said Richins opened many life insurance policies without Eric Richins’ knowledge. Prosecutors also said Richins wrongly believed an estate would transfer after his death. Prosecutors said Richins thought the estate was worth more than USD 4 million. The jury also convicted Richins of insurance fraud and forgery tied to these issues.

Richins also faced claims from Eric Richins’ family during the hearing. Eric Richins’ father, Eugene Richins, asked for a life term without parole. \"This sentence is important so Erics three sons never have to live with the fear that the person responsible for taking their father could ever harm them again,\" Eugene Richins said.

Kouri Richins murder case: Sons’ letters and family statements

Katie Richins-Benson, Eric Richins’ sister, spoke in court. \"Richins sons are not props for some twisted childrens book about grief and loss, and yet that is what theyve been reduced to by Kouri,\" Richins-Benson said. Richins had published a childrens book about grief after Eric Richins died. The case drew attention after Richins was arrested in 2023.

Social workers read letters written by the three children. The sons said they would feel unsafe if Richins was released. They said Richins threatened to kill their animals. They also said Richins showed videos of famished children in war zones. The videos played when the children refused undercooked food.

The middle son, now 11, blamed greed in a statement. \"You took away my dad for no reason other than greed, and you only cared about yourself and your stupid boyfriends,\" the child said. The child said there was pressure to parent younger siblings. The child also alleged fear about sitting on Eric Richins’ side of the bed.

The oldest son, now 13, also described home life in a letter. The child said siblings needed to care for each other. \"but his younger brother mostly took care of me, though, because I was locked in my room,\" the child wrote. The child said Richins locked the child inside often. The child said it happened \"pretty much daily\" while Richins was drunk.

Richins responded after hearing the children’s statements. \"I will and have always prioritised your safety,\" Richins said. The sons were not in court. Eugene Richins said the children were 9, 7 and 5 when Eric Richins died. Richins-Benson now had the boys in her care, according to the statement.

Kouri Richins murder case: Possible sentences and pending charges

The aggravated murder charge allowed two main sentencing options under state law. The punishment can be 25 years to life in prison. It can also be life without parole, which Mrazi imposed. Prosecutors did not seek the death penalty. The judge also had discretion to run other sentences together or consecutively.

Sentencing on attempted aggravated murder depended on bodily injury findings. Prosecutors said Eric Richins broke out in hives after one bite. Prosecutors said Eric Richins used a son’s EpiPen. Prosecutors also said Eric Richins drank Benadryl, then passed out. Possible prison ranges included 15 years to life, 6 years to life, or 5 years to life.

The remaining felony counts carried separate sentencing ranges. Two insurance fraud counts were second-degree felonies. Each count carried a possible 1-15 year prison term. The forgery count was a third-degree felony. That charge was punishable by 0-5 years in prison. Richins also faced more than two dozen money-related charges in a separate case.

Kouri Richins murder case: Trial, evidence, and verdict timeline

The trial was planned to last five weeks. It ended sooner after the defence rested without calling witnesses. Defence lawyers said prosecutors lacked proof for a murder conviction. Jurors deliberated for just under three hours. The jury then returned guilty verdicts on all counts, including aggravated murder and attempted murder.

Prosecutors presented texts between Richins and a lover at trial. Prosecutors said the messages showed fantasies about leaving Eric Richins. Prosecutors said they also referenced gaining millions in a divorce. Prosecutors also introduced phone searches. Those searches included the lethal dose of fentanyl and how poisoning appears on death certificates.

The defence argued Eric Richins was addicted to painkillers. Prosecutors challenged that claim with police body camera footage. Prosecutors said the footage showed Richins telling an officer that Eric Richins had no history of illicit drug use. With the life-without-parole sentence now set, appeals and other pending charges remained the next steps in court.
