L&T Requires Approx. 35,000 Workers But Struggling To Hire, Says SN Subrahmanyan

Larsen & Toubro Ltd., an Indian Conglomerate, requires nearly 35,000 workers but is having difficulty finding them, according to the firm's CEO and MD, SN Subrahmanyan.

In an interaction with CNBC-TV18, he said, "Indian labourers lack skill sets, and, therefore, there is a need to upskill them." He went on to say that L&T upskills workers through modularity and automation, which complicates the hiring process.

According to Subrahmanyan, the company's balance sheet has a backlog of over $50 billion as a result of a labour shortage. He added that the company requires workers for carpentry, masonry, and heavy earthwork because of the backlog in the EPC industry.

This change is a result of a greater focus being placed on up and re-skilling across industries.
According to a LinkedIn study, 82% of Indian professionals believe that firms are now more willing to hire people who do not have relevant work experience but do have the necessary abilities because of the shift towards skills-based recruiting.

Subrahmanyan's comments were made in light of Larsen & Toubro receiving a contract for Perdaman's urea factory in Australia. SCJV has awarded the supply and fabrication of modules on L&T Energy Hydrocarbon and Heavy Equipment on L&T Heavy Engineering.
