Laid Off By Oracle, Techie Uses Claude To Learn AI And Land 3 Job Offers In 45 Days

As Oracle reportedly expects to lay off about 18% of its global workforce by June 15, a recent post on a social media platform has gone viral with an ex-employee claiming to have secured three job offers within 45 days following a job strategy.

In a Reddit post titled "Got multiple offers within 45 days of being laid off. Here's what I did," the software engineer explained how they turned the job loss into an opportunity to sharpen their skills and secure multiple job offers. And finally, landing an AI engineer role with a 20 percent hike on his previous CTC.

"I got laid off by Oracle on Mar 31, as with 30k others. To be honest, I didn't think much about it. I was like, cool, I have to lock in now. Here's what I did, and this might help y'all to get out of this "between jobs" phase," the user detailed in a Reddit post.

According to the post, the software engineer didn't let the layoff incident dampen their confidence. Instead, they started preparing for the next step. The techie started using Claude to learn the basics of AI engineering from scratch. They spent around one to two hours daily to get a complete understanding of fundamentals, such as transformers and attention mechanisms, while also building projects to showcase skills.

"1-2 hours every day for around a month, and I had two projects to showcase after this. Learned using Claude. Asked to make a 30-day plan and completed the plan accordingly," they said.

Alongside that, the engineer also focused on system design, spending roughly two hours a day studying material from Hello Interview, ByteByteGo and various Subtrack articles. Not just learning new skills, the techie also dedicated several hours to data structures and algorithms (DSA), a key area for technical interviews.

The ex-Oracle employee also set aside time to update their job profiles on various platforms such as Naukri, and marked themselves as an immediate joiner and applied to 10-15 openings daily across company career pages, LinkedIn, Wellfound, Indeed, and other platforms. According to him, company career portals proved most effective for applications, while Naukri helped recruiters discover his profile. LinkedIn Premium also helped the techie to connect with many employers.

Reflecting on the journey, the techie wrote, "Most of all, I was curious to learn every day. I was soaking in knowledge like a sponge. I get distracted every often by reading some system design articles too deeply when not actually needed again, I'm no Saint."

Eventually, the hard work and persistence paid off when the techie landed an AI engineer job after giving interviews from early May to mid-May.

The post garnered many comments from social media users. "Congratulations. Happy to see an engineer locking in and not dropping his shoulders. Kudos to your temperament," a user commented.

Another one commented: "Anything you read, watch with curiosity adds up, in an interview, sometimes you yourself get shocked about how and from where the brain is bringing such information and showcasing it."
