Lam Research to Boost India's Semiconductor Skills with Rs 241 Cr Software Donation

In a significant move to bolster India's burgeoning semiconductor industry, US-based Lam Research Corp announced on Monday its commitment to donate software licenses valued at Rs 241 crore. This initiative aims to enhance the skill set of the Indian workforce, aligning with the growing demands of the electronic chips sector in the nation. The collaboration involves a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), focusing on the widespread application of Semiverse Solutions to cultivate a proficient semiconductor manufacturing workforce in India.

Boosting Indias Semiconductor Skills

This strategic partnership traces back to a joint statement released by the governments of the US and India during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the White House in June 2023. Under this agreement, Lam Research pledges to provide nearly USD 29 million (INR 241 crore) in software licenses over the forthcoming two years. This endeavor will facilitate training for approximately 2,800 students. The ISM is set to contribute by establishing necessary infrastructure and covering operational expenses. Meanwhile, IISc will undertake a "Train-the-Trainers" program at selected universities across India, with Lam Research deploying a dedicated team to support this nationwide educational expansion.

The MoU marks the culmination of a successful pilot project in collaboration with IISc and lays down a framework for extending this initiative to multiple universities throughout India. Rangesh Raghavan, Corporate Vice President and General Manager at Lam Research India, emphasized the critical role of virtual-physical fabrication worlds, enabled by Semiverse Solutions, in swiftly scaling up a skilled workforce to meet industry demands.

With an ambitious goal, the program is designed to educate up to 60,000 Indian engineers in semiconductor fabrication technologies over a ten-year period. This comprehensive approach includes program management and customization of course curriculums to suit industry needs. Akash Tripathi, CEO of ISM, highlighted the importance of effective skill development partnerships in sustaining the growth momentum of India's semiconductor ecosystem.

This collaboration between Lam Research, ISM, and IISc represents a forward-thinking approach to addressing the skill gap in India's semiconductor industry. By leveraging advanced software solutions and fostering educational partnerships, this initiative is poised to significantly contribute to India's strategic vision of becoming a key player in the global semiconductor market.
