The Maharashtra government has announced a four-day dry period across 29 municipal corporation areas going to polls, banning the sale and consumption of alcohol from January 13 to January 16, 2026, as the state prepares for civic body elections. The restrictions come into effect immediately after election campaigning ends on January 13, with all public rallies and political activities halting in poll-bound urban centres.

Under the government order, all liquor shops, bars, permit rooms, and establishments selling alcohol will remain closed within the limits of the 29 municipal corporations holding elections.

The state administration has warned of strict action against violations of the dry day norms and has urged citizens, voters and business owners to cooperate during the election period. Security and monitoring have also been intensified in sensitive areas to prevent any untoward incidents ahead of and during polling.

In addition to election-related restrictions, Mumbai residents and visitors will also experience several officially notified dry days in January 2026 due to national and Maharashtra-specific observances. On these days, the sale and public service of alcohol will stop across the city, covering liquor shops, bars, hotels, and restaurants, affecting social gatherings, business events, and tourism-related activities.

Makar Sankranti - January 14, 2026 (Wednesday): The festival, which celebrates the sun's movement into Capricorn, will be observed as a state-level dry day. Alcohol sales across licensed shops, bars, hotels and restaurants will remain banned for the entire day.

Republic Day - January 26, 2026 (Monday): A nationwide mandatory dry day across India, including Maharashtra. All liquor shops, pubs and hotel bars in Mumbai are expected to remain shut, with strict enforcement to ensure compliance.

Shaheed Diwas - January 30, 2026 (Friday): This Maharashtra-specific observance commemorates freedom fighters Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar and Shivaram Rajguru, who were executed in 1931. Alcohol retail counters and serving establishments will stay closed for the full day to maintain public decorum.
