LPG Gas Cylinder E-KYC Rules: How To Be Eligible For Free LPG Cylinders This Diwali In UP, Other States?

The Uttar Pradesh chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, has declared free LPG cylinders for poor families for Diwali and Holi. The first free gas cylinder will be awarded this Diwali, and at least over 1.89 crore beneficiaries in the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) will be eligible. He also explained the LPG subsidy offered under the PMUY scheme by the government. However, to successfully receive free LPG, it is important that your Aadhaar biometric authentication (BAA) is completed.

Uttar Pradesh Free LPG Cylinder This Diwali

The UP government has declared an up to Rs 1,500 crore outlay to distribute free LPG cylinders to eligible families under the PMUY.

He also explained the benefits of the LPG subsidy. He said, "The price of one domestic gas cylinder is Rs 983.45, and out of this, the Government of India provides a subsidy of Rs 335. You have to spend Rs 648.55 from your own pocket."

Overall, the government will offer two LPG cylinders free every year and each will be delivered in Diwali and Holi. Adityanath said, "With the money you save, you can buy Diwali sweets and lamps."

Why LPG Gas Cylinder E-KYC Is Crucial To Receive Free LPG Cylinders?

Since free LPG cylinders are applicable to PMUY beneficiaries in some of the states mentioned above, e-KYC becomes mandatory to complete. With effect from October 1, 2026, the Oil Ministry made mandatory completion of biometric Aadhaar authentication to avail the benefits offered under the PMUY scheme, which eventually also applies to LPG subsidy.

Each state has its own rules and regulations. As per reports, oil marketing companies will launch a booking process 10 to 15 days in advance ahead of the Diwali festival. The LPG beneficiaries will have to pay the cost of the cylinders during the time of booking. Post LPG delivery, the government will reportedly transfer a 100% refund of the LPG to the beneficiary's linked bank account within 3-4 days.

LPG Subsidy Rules From October 1, 2026

By being a PMUY account beneficiary, LPG users get a subsidy of Rs 200 to Rs 300 on their domestic LPG cylinders. These subsidies are offered on four LPG refills per year. The subsidy reduces the prices of 14.2 Kg LPG cylinders which are purchased at retail price.

The subsidy is directly transferred to the beneficiaries' bank account linked to their PMUY account, and only after purchasing the LPG cylinder at retail price. So you basically get a refund of Rs 200-300.

However, if you have not completed your e-KYC, then you will not be eligible for these subsidies. The Oil Ministry has directed oil marketing companies like Indian Oil, BPCL, and HPCL to halt LPG subsidy benefits of customers who have not completed their biometric authentication (BAA) immediately until they complete the e-KYC process.

Free LPG Cylinders State-Wise

UP is not the only one offering free LPG cylinders this Diwali. Many other states like Goa, Andhra Pradesh, Delhi and Uttarakhand have also declared a similar scheme.

In Delhi, the government is offering two free LPG cylinders to all ration card-holding families annually. Also, Andhra Pradesh government launched the "Deepam 2.0 Scheme," under which women holding white ration cards will be eligible for 3 free LPG cylinders per annum and can be booked every four months.

Elsewhere, the Uttarakhand government is also offering 3 free LPG cylinders per year under their 'Antyodaya Ration Card' scheme. The Goa government also launched its Antyodaya Anna Yojana, where 3 LPG cylinders will be given free of cost, which is an annual assistance of Rs 3,000 to beneficiaries.
