LPG Gas Cylinder New Update: Ujjwala Scheme Subsidy Cut from 9 to 4 Free Cylinders Per Year - What It Means
The government has revised the subsidy structure under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, a major cooking gas support scheme for low-income households. Under the updated arrangement, eligible beneficiaries will now receive subsidised LPG refills for up to four cylinders per year, down from the earlier limit of nine.
LPG Gas Cylinder New Update: Ujjwala Scheme Subsidy Slashed, Free Cylinders Cut to 4 Per Year
This change comes at a time when international LPG prices are climbing, driven largely by ongoing tensions in West Asia, which has disrupted global energy supply chains and increased import costs.
Government Revises LPG Subsidy Rules: What has changed for Ujjwala beneficiaries?
Under the revised framework, households enrolled in the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will continue to receive financial support, but with a reduced annual cap.
Earlier entitlement: up to 9 subsidised cylinders per year
New entitlement: up to 4 subsidised cylinders per year
Subsidy amount: up to Rs 300 per cylinder for Ujjwala users (for the first four refills)

Officials clarified that beyond these subsidised cylinders, consumers will have to pay market-linked prices.
Why Cooking Gas is Getting More Expensive
According to the oil ministry, the landed cost of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder has surged to over Rs 1,600 due to rising international benchmark prices. This increase is primarily linked to the Saudi Contract Price (CP), which is used as a global pricing reference.
Despite this sharp rise, consumers are not paying the full international cost directly. State-run oil marketing companies are absorbing a significant portion of the difference, leading to what officials describe as an "under-recovery" of about Rs 700 per cylinder.
Gas Cylinder Reality Check: True Cost vs What Consumers Pay
Even after recent price adjustments, the government highlighted that consumers continue to receive indirect benefits through price support:
Actual international cost: Rs 1,600 per cylinder
Domestic consumer price: Rs 942 per cylinder (non-Ujjwala users)
Effective price for Ujjwala users: Rs 642 per cylinder (for first 4 refills)
In simple terms, the government is still covering a large part of the actual cost, even if it is not labelled as a direct subsidy.
As per officials estimate, Non-Ujjwala consumers receive an implicit support of around Rs 700 per cylinder. Ujjwala beneficiaries receive about Rs 1,000 per cylinder in total benefit including direct subsidy plus price support.
