LPG Gas Cylinder Rules Changed Again: What Does 25-Days & 30-Days Rule Mean On Indane Gas, HP Gas, Bharat Gas?

The government has changed the rules for gas cylinders once again with major good news for rural areas LPG customers. Amidst an adequate LPG supply scenario, the government has directed oil marketing companies to revise the LPG refilling booking intervals to 25 days for rural area customers from the earlier 45 days. Now, both rural and urban area customers will have an LPG refill gap of 25 days. However, there is another 30-day rule that also impacts Indane Gas, HP Gas, and Bharat Gas. Let's find out how!

Gas Cylinder Rule Cut to 25 Days

In its latest circular, the Oil Ministry said, "Now, in view of the present LPG supply position and the considerable reduction in refill backlogs as compared to the situation prevailing at the time of introduction of the demand-management measures, the Ministry has decided to revise the existing refill booking interval and prescribe an inter-refill booking gap of 25 days uniformly for all Domestic LPG consumers, including those in rural areas."

This came after the ministry changed the rule of LPG refills in early March 2026 due to West Asia war. That time, 25-day booking interval was declared for urban area customers, while rural area customers had to wait for 45-days for LPG refills. In the pre-West Asia war era, it usually took a 21-day gap for LPG refills.

So here's what happened:

  • The 45-days LPG refill rule is scrapped for LPG booking for rural area customers.
  • There is no change in 25-days LPG refill booking gap for urban area customers.

The new rule is a big relief for rural customers. As per the CEEW study, among rural households, 73 per cent used LPG in the previous 90 days, but only 23 per cent use it exclusively; half still rely on firewood as their primary fuel, and just 47 per cent of LPG users receive doorstep delivery, leaving refill cost and last-mile logistics as the binding constraints.

On affordability, the survey reveals that at a refill price of Rs 400 for a 14.2 kg LPG cylinder, at least 80 percent of surveyed rural households, urban informal settlement households and migrant workers report that they would transition to exclusive LPG usage. The median willingness to pay was Rs 500 across the three groups. Both figures are below the current effective subsidised PMUY cylinder price of Rs 642.

Gas Cylinder Rule Of 30-Days

The 30-day rule was imposed in late May, after the government revised its Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Amendment Order, 2026, making it mandatory for LPG customers to terminate their Indane, Bharat Gas and HP Gas connections within 30 days from getting their PNG connections.

But worry not, you can still get your LPG connections back if you are switching to a new place that has no PNG infrastructure.

Since customers are asked to terminate their LPG connection within 30 days of getting PNG, the government has announced a provision that allows these customers to restore their LPG connection.

The new rule guides customers to obtain a transfer voucher that can be used in the future for restoring LPG connection when shifting to a non-PNG area.
