LPG Gas Cylinder Rules: Why You Have To Surrender Your Indane Gas, Bharat Gas, HP Gas? PNG Connection Rules
Many citizens have reportedly started receiving SMS messages instructing them to surrender their LPG cylinders namely Indane Gas, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas. This pattern has risen since the US-Israel-Iran war in the Middle East, which has impacted global oil and gas supply. The government has already announced customers should surrender their domestic LPG connections or stop applying for new LPG connections if and only if they have PNG connections. This is part of the government's rule of 'One Household, One Gas Connection.'
The reason behind one house with one gas connection is to eliminate black marketing, ensure genuine usage of cooking gas and to bring opportunities to other citizens who genuinely require an LPG connection or depend upon one cooking gas connection.

Indane Gas, Bharat Gas, HP Gas Rules:
Indane Gas is distributed by Indian Oil, Bharat Gas is distributed by BPCL and HP Gas is distributed by HPCL.
Since the US-Israel-Iran war, the world is facing LPG supply crunch. The Indian oil companies are also pushed to hike commercial LPG prices significantly, while increasing domestic LPG prices by Rs 60 per cylinder.
Amidst price hikes, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas reiterates that domestic LPG distribution continues to be normal and there have been no reports of dry-out.
The latest data of ministry showed that around 95% of cylinder deliveries are being completed through delivery authentication code. The commercial LPG sales of around 15,900 tonnes and 876 tonnes of auto LPG have been recorded in the last two days. About 1.2 lakh 5 kg cylinders have also been sold. Over 10,000 awareness camps have been conducted since 3rd April, during which more than 1.84 lakh 5 kg cylinders have been sold so far.
While prioritizing LPG allocation, the government further introduced various rules. One of them included the booking interval from 21 to 25 days in urban areas and up to 45 days in rural areas for LPG refills. But then in March, government also announced a rule to surrender your LPG.
Who Has To Surrender LPG Connection?
Under the LPG Control Order amendment dated 14 March 2026, consumers with PNG connections are required to surrender their domestic LPG connections and cannot obtain new LPG connections.
Hence, the customers who have PNG connections will have to submit their LPG gas cylinder connections. The government has also announced a timeframe for citizens to switch to PNG completely if they have the infrastructure and facility in their society or household. Failed to do, their LPG connection will be removed. The timeframe to remove LPG was set for three months from late-March.
Hence, the National PNG Drive 2.0 has been extended till June 30, 2026, to sustain momentum in PNG expansion.
Surrender Your LPG Connections SMS:
Many citizens are receiving alerts or update through SMS or official app, instructing them to surrender their LPG connections if they already have a PNG connection. This is a nationwide verification drive.
The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (Regulation of Supply and Distribution) Amendment
Order, 2026 has imposed the following rules for LPG connections:
- No person having a Piped Natural Gas connection and also having domestic LPG connection shall retain a domestic LPG connection, or take refills of domestic LPG cylinders from any Government oil company, or through their distributors. Such persons will be required to immediately surrender their domestic LPG connection.
- No person having a Piped Natural Gas connection, shall obtain a domestic LPG connection, or take refills of domestic LPG cylinders from any Government oil company, or through their distributors.
The main goal is to avoid duplicate usage of gas connections at a time when global energy market is struggling due to Middle East conflict. This is also an alternative to reduce dependency on LPG usage.
Since March 2026, about 6.31 Lakh PNG connections have been gasified and infrastructure has been created for additional 2.67 Lakh connections, taking the total to 8.98 lakh connections. Further, about 6.93 Lakh customers have been registered for new connections.
On May 6, the ministry data mentioned that about 49,200 PNG consumers had surrendered their LPG connections via MYPNGD.in website as of May 5, 2026.
