LPG Cylinder Price Change on June 1: Ongoing West Asia crisis, Strait of Hormuz closure, and recent uptick in CNG, petrol, and diesel prices have put the spotlight on LPG cylinder price change. State-run oil marketing companies (OMCs) like Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), review and revise LPG cylinder prices on the 1st of every month.

The prices of commercial and domestic LPG cylinders are revised on the first day of every month. Commercial LPG cylinder prices witnessed a sharp increase on May 1, reportedly prompting many eateries, restaurants, and cloud kitchens to pass on the higher costs to customers by raising menu prices. Amid concerns over a fresh LPG price hike on June 1, let's take a look at recent trends and what they may indicate for the upcoming revision.

LPG Cylinder Price Hike on May 1

Indians saw one of the steepest price hike in LPG cylinders on May 1 amid concerns about LPG supply shortage due to the US-Israel war on Iran. Commercial LPG cyliner prices were sharply increased by Rs 993. Hence, the commercial LPG cylinder price skyrocketed to Rs 3,071.5 per kg from May 1 onwards.

However, domestic LPG cylinders( ie 14.2 kg LPG cylinders of Indane, Bharat Gas, HP Gas, etc) remained unchanged on May 1. LPG cylinders are among the largest sources of cooking fuel in India, with more than 33 crore households relying on them. May revision of the commercial LPG cylinder rate was applicable to commercial and bulk LPG categories.

Domestic LPG Cylinders

Domestic LPG cylinders are subsidised and widely used for cooking across India. The government also runs the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana scheme, which is the government's flagship initiative launched to provide clean cooking fuel to women from below the poverty line (BPL).

LPG Cylinder Price Hike on April 1

LPG cylinder price revision in May, limited to commercial LPG cylinders, came a month after both categories saw a steep price surge. While domestic LPG cylinder prices surged in mid-March, the 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder by Indane, Bharat Gas, and HP Gas became expensive on April 1.

LPG commercial cylinder price jumped by Rs 195.5 in Delhi and by Rs 218 per cylinder in Kolkata. Domestic LPG cylinder price remained unchanged on 1 April. Domestic LPG cylinder rate stood at Rs 913 per 14.2 kg in Delhi on April 1.

LPG Cylinder Price Hike in March

The price of a domestic cooking LPG cylinder (14.2 kg)was increased by Rs 60 per 14.2 kg cylinder on March 7. The price of 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder also increased by Rs 115 from March 7 onwards.

The price of 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder in Delhi surged from Rs 853 to Rs 913. Domestic LPG cylinder surged to Rs 912 from Rs 852.5 in Mumbai, from Rs from Rs 879 to Rs 930 in Kolkata, and from Rs 868.50 to Rs 928.50 in Chennai.

In Delhi, the price of a 19-kg commercial cylinder has increased from Rs 1768.50 to Rs 1883. In Mumbai, the price has risen from Rs 1720.50 to Rs 1835. Similarly, in Kolkata, the price has gone up from Rs 1875.50 to Rs 1990, while in Chennai it has increased from Rs 1929 to Rs 2043.50.

Given the pas three months of trend of commercial and domestic LPG price hike, there are chances that LPG prices may see some changes in June. According to a report by Brickwork Ratings, "Brent crude's firming above USD 100/bbl, driven by regional strikes and Hormuz disruption risks, heightens India's exposure as the import mix shifts back to Middle Eastern supply. Sustained disruptions could propel prices to USD 120-150, escalating inflationary and fiscal pressures rendering energy diversification and strategic reserves critical policy priorities."
