LPG Price Hike From April 8: Domestic Cooking Gas to Cost Rs. 50 More Starting Tomorrow

The central government has announced a LPG cylinder price hike in India starting April 8, 2025, Tuesday, disappointing millions of households across India. The LPG rate hike will affect both Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries and regular users who rely on LPG cylinders for cooking. The hike was announced by Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Monday.

LPG Cylinder Price Hike from April 8: What Are the New Rates?

The LPG price hike in India comes at a time when inflation and rising energy costs are already putting pressure on household budgets. Starting April 8, 2025, LPG cylinder rates will be increased by ₹50 for all consumers, including both Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries that means the subsidised users and non-Ujjwala users i.e. regular consumers.
Currently, the price of a 14.2 kg domestic LPG cylinder in India is around ₹803. After the hike, it will cost Rs. 853 from Tuesday, April 8, once the new rates come into effect.

This LPG gas price increase in India is expected to impact over 30 crore households, especially in rural and urban lower-income groups who are already burdened with rising food and energy costs. Even PM Ujjwala Yojana users, who benefit from government subsidies, will now pay Rs. 550 instead of Rs. 500.

Current LPG Cylinder Prices In India Before the Hike

Today LPG prices in India for the 19 kg commercial LPG are around Rs 1762, while the 5 kg domestic LPG costs Rs 299 and the 47.5 kg commercial ones cost Rs 4,402. Even though commercial LPG cylinder prices were recently slashed, domestic LPG prices have now been increased, affecting common people directly. Households and small businesses that use multiple cylinders per month will feel the pinch.

Petrol and Diesel Excise Duty Also Increased by Rs.2 Per Litre

In addition to the LPG price hike, the government has also announced a Rs. 2 per litre increase in excise duty on petrol and diesel, effective April 8, 2025. This decision was confirmed by the Finance Ministry of India, which stated that the hike is part of revenue-boosting measures amid rising global economic uncertainties.
However, according to the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry, there will be no immediate increase in retail fuel prices, as public sector oil marketing companies (OMCs) like IOC, BPCL, and HPCL will absorb the cost in the short term.
