LPG Price: India vs Nepal vs Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh vs Pakistan vs US vs Canada:Where Is Cooking Gas Cheaper?

The recent Rs. 29 increase in domestic LPG cylinder prices has sparked concerns among households across India. However, despite the latest hike, the government has defended the revision by pointing out that Indian consumers continue to pay some of the lowest cooking gas prices in the world.

LPG Price

Effective June 7, the price of a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder has increased to Rs. 942 in Delhi for non-PMUY consumers, while beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) effectively pay just Rs. 642 per cylinder after receiving a subsidy of Rs. 300 per refill.

According to data released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, LPG prices in India remain significantly lower than those in neighbouring South Asian countries as well as developed economies such as the United States, Australia and Canada.

LPG Cylinder Price in India After Latest Hike

After the latest LPG price hike of Rs. 29 effective June 7, a 14.2-kg domestic LPG cylinder now costs Rs. 942 in Delhi, Rs. 941.50 in Mumbai and Rs. 944.50 in Bengaluru. However, beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) continue to receive a subsidy of Rs. 300 per cylinder, bringing their effective cost down to just Rs. 642. Despite the increase, domestic LPG prices in India remain significantly lower than international market-linked rates and continue to be among the cheapest in South Asia.

Even after the hike, domestic LPG prices remain well below international market-linked rates, which are estimated to be above Rs. 1,600 per cylinder.

India vs Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka: LPG Price Comparison

A comparison of LPG prices across South Asia shows that Indian households continue to benefit from some of the lowest cooking gas rates in the region, even after the latest price hike. While PMUY beneficiaries in India pay an effective price of Rs. 642 per 14.2-kg cylinder and non-PMUY consumers pay Rs. 942, cooking gas is more expensive in neighbouring countries.

A similar-sized LPG cylinder costs around Rs. 1,046 in Pakistan, Rs. 1,207 in Nepal, Rs. 1,225 in Bangladesh and Rs. 1,241 in Sri Lanka. The gap is even wider when compared with developed nations, where LPG prices are estimated at Rs. 1,755 in the United States, Rs. 1,765 in Australia and as high as Rs. 2,411 in Canada.

Compared to India, consumers in the United States and Australia pay nearly three times more for a similar quantity of cooking gas, while Canadian households pay almost four times as much.

Why Is LPG Cheaper in India?

One of the biggest reasons is the direct subsidy provided to PMUY beneficiaries, who receive Rs. 300 per cylinder on eligible refills. The Centre has also approved compensation of around Rs. 30,000 crore for oil marketing companies to help absorb a portion of rising international fuel costs.

Officials say domestic consumers are currently paying significantly less than the actual market-linked cost of LPG. While the retail price of a cylinder in Delhi is Rs. 942, the international market-linked cost is estimated to be over Rs. 1,600.

Global LPG Prices Have Surged

The latest LPG price hike comes amid a sharp rise in international energy costs. According to government data, the Saudi Contract Price (CP), a key benchmark for LPG pricing, has risen by around 46% between February and June 2026 due to disruptions and geopolitical tensions in West Asia. India imports a large portion of its LPG requirements, making domestic prices vulnerable to movements in global energy markets.
