Lunar Eclipse August 2026: Check Date, Time, Visibility And Will It Be Visible In India; All You Need To Know

This month a dramatic partial lunar eclipse will take place and it will be one of the most important celestial events of the month.

According to reports by NASA, the lunar eclipse will be a partial lunar eclipse rather than a total one. However, it will come close to totality, with about 93% of the Moon's diameter entering Earth's dark umbral shadow, according to NASA.

Some other astronomical calculations describe the event as having roughly 96% of the Moon's surface within the umbra at maximum eclipse.

August 2026 Lunar Eclipse Date And Time

The the lunar eclipse is falling on August 28th in UTC. Depending on the time zone, however, the event will begin on the night of August 27 and continue into August 28.

According to NASA's eclipse data, the maximum eclipse will occur at approximately 04:14 UTC on August 28. The partial lunar eclipse will last for more than three hours.

For India, which follows Indian Standard Time, the peak will occur at around 9:44 AM IST on August 28. As a result, the August 2026 lunar eclipse will not be visible from India.

Why Is It A Deep Partial Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, which causes the Earth's shadow to fall across the lunar surface.
In a total lunar eclipse, the entire Moon passes through Earth's darkest central shadow, known as the umbra. During a partial lunar eclipse, only part of the Moon enters the umbra.

So the upcoming lunar eclipse event is falling into the latter category. The Moon will not be completely covered, but a very large portion of its disk will move through Earth's umbral shadow. NASA says approximately 93% of the Moon's diameter will be inside the umbra at maximum eclipse.

As per Nasa, the Moon may develop a reddish or rusty-orange colour during the eclipse sometimes popularly called "Blood Moons". The exact colour can vary depending on atmospheric conditions, including dust and clouds.

August 2026 Lunar Eclipse: Will It Be Visible In India?

No. The August 2026 lunar eclipse will not be visible from India. The August 28 lunar eclipse will be visible from various parts of North America, South America, Europe and Africa. People who want to see the lunar eclipse where it is visible, they can view with the naked eye, no eye protection is required unlike a solar eclipse.
