With millions expected at the Maha Kumbh Mela 2024, cybersecurity threats pose significant risks. Authorities in Uttar Pradesh are implementing proactive measures to protect pilgrims from potential scams and cyber attacks.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, a significant religious gathering that occurs once every 144 years, is set to draw between 40 to 45 million devotees to Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, the most populous district in India's most populous state. This massive event is not only a spiritual congregation but also a prime target for cybercriminals. Cybersecurity experts from Aon, mFilterIt, and Quick Heal have issued warnings about the potential increase in sophisticated cyber attacks targeting pilgrims.

With the Maha Kumbh Mela scheduled from 13 January to 26 February, preparations are underway to accommodate the influx of devotees. However, reports of cyber scams have surfaced, with fraudsters using fake websites to offer non-existent accommodation and services related to the event. These scam artists not only create convincing online ads but also reach out to potential victims through WhatsApp and email, providing fake payment details to secure bookings. Once the payment is made, the victims find themselves cheated, with the scammers becoming unreachable.
Enhanced Cybersecurity Measures in Place
As devotees begin to arrive in Prayagraj, the Uttar Pradesh government and police have taken proactive steps to combat cybercrime. Two weeks prior, authorities apprehended four individuals for operating fraudulent accommodation booking sites. The Director-General of Police, Prashant Kumar, highlighted the state's commitment to cybersecurity by collaborating with technical institutions and employing technical experts. A dedicated cyber police station in Prayagraj is actively working to safeguard the digital space, with a helpline number, 1930, established for reporting cybercrimes.
Cybersecurity professionals have outlined a range of potential threats, from phishing and ransomware to denial of service attacks. These cyber attacks not only aim to defraud individuals by stealing personal and payment information but can also disrupt essential services and compromise sensitive data. Apurva Gopinath from Aon emphasized the attractiveness of the gathered data to hackers, while Dhiraj Gupta from mFilterIt mentioned the company's efforts in providing AI-driven solutions to mitigate these risks.
Additional Vulnerabilities to Consider
Public infrastructure, including wi-fi networks and security systems like CCTV cameras and drones, are also at risk of cyber intrusions. Vishal Salvi from Quick Heal Technologies Ltd. pointed out the susceptibility of intelligent surveillance cameras connected to the internet, which could be exploited for illicit activities such as snooping. Salvi also cautioned against using public internet networks for financial transactions, highlighting the potential for wi-fi hacking.
Legal experts voice concerns that some cyber attackers may be driven by motives other than financial gain. With the Maha Kumbh Mela's national significance and the vast congregation of pilgrims, attackers could aim to cause widespread alarm or engage in acts of vandalism or terrorism. Senior Supreme Court advocate N. S. Nappinai emphasized the need for heightened cybersecurity measures given these potential threats.
In conclusion, the Maha Kumbh Mela not only represents a monumental religious gathering but also a significant cybersecurity challenge. With the concerted efforts of the Uttar Pradesh government, police, cybersecurity firms, and legal experts, steps are being taken to secure this historic event against digital threats. As the festival draws near, authorities remain vigilant, ensuring the safety and security of millions of pilgrims in the digital realm.
