Maharashtra CM Seeks Support Price for Onions After Poll Setback

In a candid admission, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde highlighted the significant impact of farm distress on the Mahayuti alliance's performance in the recent Lok Sabha polls. Addressing a meeting of the Commission for Agriculture Costs and Price, Shinde revealed plans to engage with the new Union Agriculture Minister, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, to discuss the establishment of support prices for key crops such as onion, soybean, and cotton.

Shinde's acknowledgment comes in the wake of electoral setbacks in regions pivotal for agricultural production. "We faced issues because of onions around Nashik, a major production centre in north Maharashtra. Onions made us cry in Nashik, soybean and cotton in Marathwada and Vidarbha in polls," he stated. The Chief Minister's comments underscore the electoral repercussions of agricultural policies and market dynamics on the ruling coalition's fortunes.

The imposition of an onion export ban by the Centre in December last year was aimed at controlling retail prices but sparked protests among farmers, particularly in the Nashik area. This decision, although reversed in early May, had already influenced voter sentiment, contributing to the Mahayuti alliance's loss of key Lok Sabha seats including Nashik and Dindori to opposition parties.

The Mahayuti alliance, which includes the Shiv Sena, BJP, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and Rashtriya Samaj Paksha (RSP), secured only 17 out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra. This outcome has prompted a reevaluation of strategies concerning agricultural policies and support mechanisms.

Further emphasizing his commitment to addressing farmers' woes, Shinde mentioned his conversation with Prime Minister Narendra Modi about farm-related issues. He also highlighted the central government's recent initiative under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, which saw the authorization of the 17th instalment of PM Kisan Nidhi funds. This move will channel nearly Rs 20,000 crore towards approximately 9.3 crore farmers across India.

The state government has also been proactive in implementing measures aimed at enhancing farmer welfare, according to Shinde. These efforts reflect a broader strategy to mitigate farm distress and improve agricultural sustainability and profitability for farmers in Maharashtra.

As discussions with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan are set to take place, stakeholders within the agricultural sector are keenly awaiting decisions that could potentially stabilize market conditions and ensure fair compensation for their produce. The outcome of these talks could be pivotal in shaping future agricultural policies and electoral dynamics in Maharashtra.
