Maharashtra Day, Buddha Purnima, Labour Day 2026: What Is Open Or Closed On May 1st? Is It Dry Today Too?
India is celebrating three big events on May 1st. These include Maharashtra Day, May Day or International Labour Day, and lastly Buddha Purnima. While Maharashtra Day is a state holiday, other two are public holidays recognized by central government. Hence, a host of services will be open or closed on Friday. This also makes May 1st as the dry day. That being said, the month starts with a long-weekend holiday for Indians.
What Is Closed Today?

First and foremost, it is a public holiday in Maharashtra. Hence, schools, colleges, offices, and even some private companies are closed on May 1st.
Apart from this, due to Buddha Purnima which is declared as national gazetted holiday, many states are likely having public holiday on May 1st as well.
Additionally, stock market is closed for Maharashtra Day. Hence, trading is not available in equity, derivates, commodities, bonds and other market related instruments on May 1st.
What Is Open Today?
Majority of retail shops are likely to operate as normal. These include restaurants, eateries and shopping malls among others. Meanwhile, public transportation such as BEST and local trains are operating as normal, however, the frequency could be less.
Also, MCX will be open for its evening session that begins from 5pm to 11.55 pm.
Furthermore, all online banking services and ATMs are operational as normal. Last but not the least, airport is open in every state for normal arrivals and departures. The airlines are also working.
Mumbai Police Traffic Advisory Today:
Due to the celebration of Maharashtra Day, Mumbai Police issued a traffic advisory for Dadar. The popular Maharashtra Day parade is being held at Shivaji Park, which has led to traffic restrictions from 6 am to 12 pm. Is May 1st Dry Day?
Yes, May 1st is a dry day for states like Maharashtra due to May Day and Maharashtra Din celebration.
What Happens On Dry Day?
When there is a dry day, all liquor shops in the respective state are closed or prohibited from selling any liquor. This also imposed for restaurants, clubs, bars and any place where alcohol is easily available.
But this rule is not applicable for private consumption of alcohol at homes.
It needs to be noted that dry day varies from state to state depending upon their culture and traditions.
