Maharashtra Water Cut From Oct 16: Why The State Is Imposing 10% Water Cut For Residents?
Maharashtra is going to introduce a minimum 10% mandatory water cut from October 16th as the state is trying to prepare for possible water shortages during the coming dry months. The decision comes amid concerns over rainfall deficiency, reservoir stocks and the impact of El Nino conditions on water availability.

Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan directed municipal corporations, municipal councils and gram panchayats across Maharashtra to implement the water cut. The reduction can also be increased if the water situation worsens.
Maharashtra Water Cut From October 16
The Maharashtra government has asked local bodies to implement at least a 10% water cut from October 16. The order covers both urban and rural areas, meaning residents across municipalities, municipal corporations and gram panchayats could be affected.
However, the exact manner in which the water cut will be implemented has not yet been announced for individual cities. Residents of Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur and other cities should wait for their respective civic bodies to announce details before assuming there will be specific changes to water supply timings.
Why Is Maharashtra Imposing A Water Cut?
The main concern is the state's water availability over the coming months. Maharashtra has been facing a rainfall deficit, with the government linking the situation partly to the El Nino phenomenon.
The Water Resources Department has assessed water availability in individual dams and planned allocations up to August 31, 2027. The planning takes into account factors such as evaporation, silt accumulation, unauthorised water extraction and the possibility of drought-like conditions.
The state has also declared drought in 265 talukas under the Trigger-1 criterion during the 2026 kharif season
Under the state's water allocation plan, drinking water will receive the highest priority and will be protected until August 31, 2027
The Maharashtra government has also asked industries to reuse or recycle at least 30% of the water they consume.
Residents should therefore avoid unnecessary water wastage and keep track of announcements from their local civic bodies ahead of October 16.
